Should I take boxing classes to prep me for Muay Thai training.

I don't know why but I keep thinking that since I have no experience fighting that maybe I should take basic boxing classes before I ascend and sign up to this mauy thai school around my area. What are your guys take on this? Should I just sign up for muay thai classes now or take boxing classes first to prep me for muay thai?

you could do boxing just to get in the habbit of doing drills and repetition. like getting your mindset turned towards practice so when u enter muay thia classes you wont be as slow learning. also in boxing they make u do cardio i believe and its a good workout. if you wanna get a little muscle and more in shape then do that. muay thia shouldnt be too tiring once you are used to training. I doubt you will use boxing in muay thia though. muay thia is in a complete different category and class then boxing. but there's no bad side to whatever choice you make.

Muay Thai huh? I've been doing Muay Thai myself for just over a year now...

I begun my Muay Thai classes with no training at all, and at first I was a bit below average (my kicks were a little awkward, my balance wasn't good). To be honest, you don't really need to take the boxing class before Muay Thai - if anything, you might want to do some fitness training - Muay Thai classes can be exhausting.

Boxing will help with with your punches (and grappling maybe? I'm not sure, I don't know much about boxing), but that's about it. Other than that, you're better off just taking the Muay Thai class straight up. If the gym is full of people that are easy to make conversation with, senseis willing to help and a great Kyoshi, you'll have nothing to worry about - you'll pick it up in no time ;)

Niether, I developed my own martial art...I call it: IKYA! It's quite effective actually, though no one ever fights me anyway so I have little reason to use it. I follow the way of Miyagi: "Best defense...don't be there..." ;)

I see. Can you give me an example of how tough the training is? I cramp easily BTW since I've hardly ever ran during my preteen and current teenage life lol.

Sorry for the late reply. For me it varies, some lessons focus more on technique than power, while others are vice versa - but it usually always gets me trying to catch my breath.

I'm not sure what it might be like at the dojo you're planning on signing up at, but since you cramp easily and haven't ran much lately, you will find it difficult at first.
You will probably find the first few months the most physically exhausting, but as you get fitter you'll get better and be able to do more vigorous training.

I suggest doing some running and DEFINITELY stretching. If you cramp easily, you'll find your legs in the most pain as you'll be required a few head height kicks etc.
