I've thought the same thing. That the reason Shino was poisoned and couldn't aid Sasuke was because he was a side character and had no placement in the current major plot. Had he'd been there he might have seen Naruto fight Gaara and so on.

I also think Shino could defiantly have defeated Kankuro back then. Depending on your own view, Shino either won or lost the fight or it was a draw. Personally I think Shino actually won the fight. Sure he was poisoned and had help from his father, but...

- Shino was poisoned near the start of the fight (the poison cloud was actually going quite fast), but held on long enough to take Kankuro out. Only finally collapsing when Kankuro was down.

- He was able to render Kankuro's puppet useless by clogging up Karasu's joints. Kankuro never rendered Shino's insects useless.

- His insects drained Kankuro's chakra and effected Kankuro far quicker than what Kankuro's poison effected Shino.

- Kankuro is said to have won because he left the battlefield first and without aid. It was actually Shino who left the battlefield first (we're shown a scene of his dad removing the poison and afterwards Temari entering the battle area to find Kankuro). Shino had the aid of his father, but later on when Temari finds Kankuro he's immobile and can barely speak. It was never actually shown Kankuro was albe to get up on his own and quite possibly he had help from his sister.

So in my eyes Shino won. The only thing he "lost" was not aiding Sasuke. =)

Otherwise I believe it a draw.

Lastly, I'm not sure if Shino can beat Kankuro now but I certainly like to think so. XD

Plot: Everyones excuse for a character they like.

If it happened, it happened. There is no denying it, Kankuro won.

No matter how you spin it, neither of them were handicapped in any way, and they both ended up taken out. It was a draw.
