Hes clearly intelligent, uses shadow techniques, and chakra runs out quickly. what do you think of his developement so far?

I think the fact that he is a genius, he would be able to think up a more effective way, but he usually does that. So I think his development is fine

I think all character will continue to grow. Shikamaru showed his skill growth & maturity during the mission where Asuma dies.

He needs to create a special jutsu that allows him to travel through the shadows, and also create actual shadow clones that can attach to the enemies shadow and therefore not allow them to run away, and also learn the infinite darkness genjutsu, and also master the weapons that asuma used to add to his taijutsu skills
