if he had earth nature chakra and learns to use it and master it to the extent in which he can force earth to protrude and ascend or to dip he would be able to use a much much larger shadow with a much much larger range , he would also become beast having taijutsu training or being capable of adding a powerful genjutsu to shadows

a strategist is useless by himself if hes against strong shinobi
so if shikamaru was to do what i suggested then he would become kage level
