Out of all the academy students that werent in team 7 it seems Shikamaru and Heji seemed to have seperated themselves. So who would win in a forest/open field area, no back up support from either team.

neji cause he has the byakugan and even if shikamaru is smart he can not deafeat a hyuga clan member like neji cause the hyuga clan is one of the best konaha clans.

I think probably Neji. Shikamaru might have good analytical and strategic skills, but he doesn't have much going for him in terms of firepower, which Neji does have. Plus, Neji is pretty smart himself. I think even if Shikamaru found problem with Neji (which he probably would) I don't know if he's strong enough to do something and do enough damage. Also if he's planning to use the objects around Neji or something, Neji has like 360 vision so I think he'd be pretty aware of what could be used against him and see Shikamaru trying to do something.

Yeah i think it would be a long drawn out fight with shikamaru trying trap after trap on neji and maybe hitting a few but not enough power or damage overall to where once neji gets close it is over

even if neji gets caught in the shadow jutsu he doesnt need to move to block attacks, he's too fast and strong, plus i doubt he'll get caught with his byakugan
