You said spike him with shadows not shadow possession jutsu.
And that's the thing Shikamaru has to catch him. Neji can run out of range of his shadows and use Vacuum Wall Palm

Neji will get Shikamaru before that happens. Just because he is smarter does not mean he will automatically win.
And Shikamaru usually loses when he doesn't get enough prep
