Shanks always wears a long black cape over his shoulders. He initially wore slightly loose brown trousers cut below the knee and collected halfway up the shin, with golden buttons down the outer leg. Recently he has been seen wearing a similar pair, but looser and with floral patterns on it. He wears a pair of sandals and is unshaven with a short scruffy beard. In all his appearances so far, Shanks has worn a white shirt which is only buttoned halfway, leaving his chest exposed. Around his waist is a large red sash, which also holds his sabre on the right side.
Personality:
Shanks is one of the most laid back characters in the Ninja world, preferring to take his time as he travels around the world rather than rushing from one place to another. Shanks isn't cruel like many other ninjas, nor does he try rule over his comrades with fear to gain respect. His friendly nature means he won't purposely seek to harm others, and he is able to make serious characters like Scarface join in with his fun. Yet despite how simple minded he appears at first, Shanks is a complex person with some rather difficult to understand views. For example, he believes if two people share very different views, it's better they go their separate ways.
Shanks doesn't seem to mind what happens to himself; he'll take others throwing food and drink or spitting on him without fighting back and laugh with his friends at his own misfortunes. Even losing an arm did not bother him much. However he would never forgive anyone for attacking a friend. Shanks and friends crew are almost always seen partying and drinking alcoholic beverages whenever they make an appearance, as the character's favorite pastimes are attending and hosting parties and banquets. He also is against the idea of needless bloodshed, even if honour is involved and so far seems to only step up for a fight when a friend is in danger. He also seems to admire those who have courage

- Kenjutsu and Taijutsu: Shanks has gone through various lessons inorder to hone his fighting skills in sword skills and hand to hand combat. After losing his arm, his handseal speed fell along with his taijutsu and kenjutsu skills but luckily, after training he has regained those skills and is capable of fighting well with just one hand. Due having no left hand, he has trained his right hand muscles extremely, having now the ability to challenge a two hand taiijutsu fighter or a large weapon user with just one hand. He also possesses the ability of using one handed handseals
- Bartholomew abilities: Shanks has inherited the Kekkei Genkai of Bartholomew clan, which means that he also holds the paws. He used to be known for his excellent skills in using Bartholomew clan taijutsu but after losing his arm, usage of those techniques has fell, even though he still has the abilities to use them one handed.
- Kirigakure: In the past as he was still tied to Kirigakure, he received special training during his time in the missing nin hunter squad, gaining tracking skills of some sort along with better understanding in basic mist techniques.

History:
Shanks was tsn't speak much of. One of his past friends was the 4th Mizukage who refuses to talk about Shanks as they didn't have that glorious past ( this also leads him for getting angry to Ao for hearing his words wrong while Ao was scolding Chojuro ).
Unlike most of the Bartholomew clan members, Shanks lived as an outcast most of the time, due his way of thinking and anatomic differences. Shanks was an excellent ninja and he reached Kirigakure's Anbu rank by the age of 16. He gained glory in missions one after another until he faced a mission where he had to determine whether his friends would die or not. Back then Shanks was hunting bunch of rogue ninjas with the aid of Red nosed Benazz who used to think exactly opposite of what Shanks thought. Mission they had was to get rid of Akiza the Black rose Uchiha that had trespassed through the Kirigakure's territory without a permission ( Akiza had a bounty on her head, which gave Shanks' squad a perfect reason to try his luck ). While trying to track down fast moving Akiza, they were noticed and forced to engage a fight that they couldn't win. This fight led to loss of Kirigakure and the fight resulted three scars over Shanks' left eye. Once the battle was lost, Akiza offered to take their lives, but instead Shanks suggested her to take him as hostage for encountering future ninjas, just in case to get Benazz and others safe. Benazz returned to village and told everyone that Shanks was dead and had failed on a mission, which resulted his name to be removed from family records and this also broke Mei's heart. During the time he was kept as hostage, he began to learn about the easy life of a rogue ninja and became Akiza's subordinate, getting a chance to learn about Taijutsu, 
Kenjutsu along with Rain during their voyages. Shanks left the rogue ninja group after being there for six years, to start anew and travel around the world. Once he stopped in the village of Yukigakure where he met a girl named Minna and her friend Sin. These girls had him stay in the village for longer than expected, and during that time he got to know the people in that village and the villagers. There was this one villager, called Gobi. He had babyface and due that face, he got in fight with Emperor, the massive plant. Shanks came in and protected Gobi to avoid Emperor from harassing anymore. Shanks offered his arm to get Emperor leave Gobi alone, and this resulted Emperor to eat his other arm. Soon after having his arm eaten, Shanks left out to track any possible members of Seven swordsmen of the mist while hoping to get on their tracks and possibly to take away someone's sword with no luck yet. He did take part in the ninja war between Kumogakure and Sunagakure VS. Kirigakure and Iwagakure, with intentions to stop the war. The war ended soon after he began fighting and he left to travel again, knowing that during last war, he showed Kirigakure that he still existed.
