Looks | 外見 Shanks always wears a long black cape over his shoulders and wore a straw hat that he had worn for many years beforehand, and was synonymous with his image. He initially wore slightly loose brown trousers cut below the knee and collected halfway up the shin, with golden buttons down the outer leg. He has been seen wearing a similar pair, but looser and with floral patterns on them. He wears a pair of sandals and is unshaven with a short scruffy beard.
Shanks nearly always wears a white shirt which is only buttoned halfway, leaving his chest exposed. Around his waist is a large red sash, which also holds his sabre on the right side. Initially, his shirt is tucked under the sash. However, he has since has his shirt untucked, giving him a much scruffier appearance than when he is seen in the past.
The most striking thing about Shanks is the color of his red hair, where his epithet 'Red-Haired Shanks' comes from. He also has three scars across his left eye, and after saving a dear friend from a Sea King, he lost his left arm.

Personality | 性格 Shanks is one of the most laid back people there are, preferring to take his time as he and his crew travels around the world rather than rushing from one place to another. Shanks is not cruel like many others, nor does he rule over his crew with fear to gain respect. His friendly nature means he will not purposely seek to harm others, and he is able to make serious characters join in with his fun. Yet despite how simple minded he appears at first, Shanks is a complex person with some rather difficult to understand views. For example, he believes if two people share very different views, it is better they go their separate ways.
Shanks does not seem to mind what happens to himself; he will take others throwing food and drink or spitting on him without fighting back and laugh with his crew at his own misfortunes. Even losing an arm did not bother him much. However he would never forgive anyone for attacking his friend. Shanks and his crew are almost always seen partying and drinking alcoholic beverages whenever they make an appearance, as the captain's favorite pastimes are attending and hosting parties and banquets. Shanks naturally has a fun-loving partying nature and cheerful personality.
He also is against the idea of needless bloodshed, even if honor is involved and so far seems to only step up for a fight when a friend is in danger. He also seems to admire those who have courage. Shanks also has skills of diplomacy, as shown when he brokered a ceasefire between the two opposing combatants. His skills in diplomacy are so great that he managed to convince high ranking officials to agree with his proposition. He also likes teasing people, as demonstrated by his apparent reactions to children.
Despite being calm and brave most of the time, he has a quirk that means his reactions are not always fitting in what others expect of him. These include panicking when things go wrong or shrugging off people's angry disposition towards him off to greet him in a friendly manner. He also seems to be carry about something personally deep within him, as when he speaks about his 3 scars, he became serious about the a personal situation he dealt with.

History | 歴史 Shanks and Roger
Shanks was born in a small village in the outskirts of Konoha. Growing up, he was always an adventurous boy, running into the forests and playing around. He spent many days getting stronger and stronger and pretending to be a ninja and pirate. He never took his training too seriously though. He naturally was strong and the training was more enjoyable than it was time consuming or strenuous. After awhile, he later joined the academy and began to study his ninja training.
Being smaller than most, he was notoriously picked on and subject to bullying. In the beginning, it always bothered him when this happened, and he would try to fight back. This only led him to more pain and beatings. Whenever he was out after school, Shanks would head over to a restaurant near the outer areas of Konoha. Every time, an older man would notice Shanks sulk on his path. After so many days of the same repetition, the man called out to Shanks. Shanks, again in another bad mood, didn't even think about it and went to the man. The man pulled out a chair and asked the chef to get whatever Shanks wanted. Shanks began to light up instantly and ordered huge rounds of food. As Shanks was finishing his meal, the man already started packing his things. The moment Shanks finished, the man was already leaving before Shanks could get out of his chair. Before he was out of sight, the man told Shanks he can come by any time for some food.
This continued for a series of weeks. In the following time that occurred, Shanks had grown fond of the man, and the man looked over Shanks, like an uncle would. At one time, the man was stopping by the academy, he noticed Shanks being picked on. He did nothing, but witness Shanks fight back and get upset over the teasing he was receiving. As he was getting picked on, the man simply smiled from afar. He then went to back to the restaurant and waited for Shanks. When Shanks arrived, they greeted each other, and this time, rather than ignoring the bruises, he questioned them. Shanks began to explain the incidents and told him about the bullying. The man smiled the entire time and lifted his hand. He placed it on top of his head and picked up the yellow straw hat sitting on it. He picked up the hat and placed it on the sad head of Shanks, to which he began acting surprised. "Just remember Shanks, laugh off whatever they do to you. But never, good reason or not, let them hurt something you love."
After that moment, Shanks began to think about all the times he was picked on. And with each memory that came to his mind, he began to laugh. The old man smiled and got up from the table. With a simple gesture, he made his final farewell. And from then on, Shanks did not see the man, having only the straw hat to remember him by. To remember the old man, Shanks began to wear the hat everywhere he went. "I won't forget you... Roger."

After his training, Shanks became well versed in Lightning Release jutsus. After such time, Shanks realized that he had a natural affinity towards Lightning. As such, he has developed his skills to a point where he only needs a single handseal to perform all Lightning Release jutsus.

Shanks, being the gifted individual that he was, was naturally adept in the way of the sword. After much practice and training, he has since become a master of the sword and utilizes the sword in most of his battles. He is seen carrying around a saber along his waist, ready to be drawn at anytime.
After his training, Shanks became well versed in Lightning Release jutsus. After such time, Shanks realized that he had a natural affinity towards Lightning. As such, he has developed his skills to a point where he only needs a single handseal to perform all Lightning Release jutsus.
