There was a bartholomew in the bible but idk much about him.
Nothing has been said about why he always carries the bible but Kuma was known to be ruthless, so much so that he was nicknamed the Tyrant. I think he eventually got soft cuz when he was introduced, even though he was shishibukai he seemed to have a soft spot for the SH letting them live and even saving them from one of the admirables.
I think he went from being the tyrant pirate kuma to being a christian and joining the revolutionary and then becoming shichibukai and govt pacifista.
Theres still alot to learn about Kuma

He became my fav because actually i saw him with the bible. Im a GOD fearing man. he stayed my fav because i saw him PWN Zoro. And PWN Oars. and hes Crazy Fast. and i like how hes good on the low. Just a all around guy

maybe it has something to do with passing judgement
or maybe there is something in there that will do something about his memory. Something Vegapunk/the revolutionaries put in there to turn him back to normal. This way Kuma can infiltrate the marines.
anyway, I doubt it's just for show. Oda will come back to it later in the story. no doubt.

I made that question thread so questions like these could be posted there. If I didn't make it then we'd have 1000 threads about why Mihawk couldn't kill Buggy, if Sabo was alive, what Dragon is up to ... personal bias doesn't mean special treatment. I don't think a question why Kuma carries around a bible sounds reasonable enough to warrant a separate thread, but hey if you're losing your head over the internet for this then I'll just leave you alone then.

Because he's a missionary like the Bartholomew in the bible. Probably preached his religion among revolutionary forces.

he was known as the tyrant because he was ruthless. but he showed mercy to the Strawhat in more than one occasion. how ruthless can he be? he isnt living up to the name he use to have so i came to the conclusion that he got soft after converting.. but its all just speculations and i have good reasons for speculating..
but we will find out in the future...

Or maybe it was just a cover up for him to be able to join the Shicibukai as Revolutionary spy and he never was tyrant or ruthless to begin with. Obviosly they sent him there. He told Rayleigh he was working for RA.
