I'm still wondering how Madara trained him when he was practically on life support....

I think he used the genjutsu realm to train him.

Maybe though perhaps Madara simply taught him about Uchiha and Rinnegan jutsu like he said he would.

I remember seeing panels of Obito himself training in the cave so my guess is that Madara did the teaching as in telling him the Uchiha and Rinnegan jutsu and how the function while Obito trained on other areas in the cave.
