I'm sure other people wonder the same thing. Why was the first Hokage able to control Bijou and have wood kekkei genkei (KG, sprained wrist, sorry), while his brother had neither but was a master of water jutsu? Further, Tsunade a grandaughter of the first Hokage had none of those three abilities. She has unbelievable chakra control and release.
Thinking about the other KG's and given it's due to DNA, why wouldn't family share abilities? The whole point of KG's is the DNA basis. The second Hokage had half his brother's genes by chance (Tsunade 1/4), assuming Mendelian genetics for simplicity. The probability of the KG for brother's is 50/50 if the genes are simple and/or linked. Tsunade and her brother each had a probability of 1/4 of inheriting the 1st's KG, neither did, so that's a 1/16 (i.e. 1/4^2) chance of either/or wood/bijou control. The probability of getting the water KG for Tsunade and her brother is obviously halved before the square (1/64). It's late and I'm tired, so sorry if I made a mistake, and I doubt Kishi cares about this.
Is their KG some sort of dynamic (i.e. flexible) genetic basis that instills the foundation for being an excellent ninja. We know that the 1st and 2nd's extraordinary abilities, and Tsunade was the greatest medical ninja Konoha produced along with her freak strength and the titles of 5th Hokage and Sannin.
However, her brother showed no such promise it seems, perhaps he died too young.
If however, the KG is more of a basic enhancement, that takes base abilities and boosts them to extraordinary levels, it makes more sense to me.
1st.) Uncanny Bijou control (I can't explain the wood jutsu unless it's related)
2nd.) Uncanny Water jutsu (can perform them without water I believe, even Kisame has to generate water.)
5.) Tsunade's uncanny chakra control led to best medical ninja and superb taijutsu strength.
If we remove the uncanny bit, they would've all made fine ninja, perhaps great, but I think their bloodline was to boost existing (pre-birth genetics) base strengths to incredible levels.
Feel free to post thoughts and rejections, whatever interests you. Just my humble opinion.
It's late, so peace out.
