Selfie taking tourist dies after selfie-fail off bridge

Sylwia Rajchel, a Polish tourist visiting Spain, died after attempting a selfie on the outside ledge of a bridge in Spain. The 23-year-old climbed over the railing of the edge of the Puente de Triana bridge in Seville to snap a selfie, slipped and died after missing the water and falling 15 feet, striking one of the bridge’s concrete footings.

Writes the Inquisitr on Nov. 5: “Sylwia Rajchel wanted to take a selfie while on a recent trip to Spain, but the unthinkable happened. Rajchel was on a bridge trying to get the perfect picture of herself when she slipped and fell. Police say that she was ‘balancing on a ledge’ just after midnight when the accident occurred. The 23-year-old nursing student then fell 15 feet, sustaining injuries that led to her death.”

Bernadeta Rajchel, Sylwia’s 44-year-old mother, spoke about her tragic loss. “Going to Spain was a dream come true for my daughter. She had taught herself the language and was hoping to work there in the future after finishing her studies. She was a beautiful, smiling girl who had her whole life ahead of her. It’s hard to believe what’s happened, that I will never see Sylvia again,” she said, adding: “I won’t hug her and will never be able to tell her how much I love her and how proud I was of her. It breaks my heart, I feel this is nightmare that is not happening.”

Rajchel was recovered from the bridge, still alive, but later went into cardiac arrest and died. The area she was visiting, shortly after midnight, is known for its clubs and bars. It’s unclear if Rajchel was under the influence when she made the decision to step out on the ledge.

NewsOxy reported that Sylwia Rajchel’s selfie death “isn’t the only recent incident. This horrific news follows several other recent deaths caused by taking pictures.”

Now there may be people blowing shit out of proportion and talking about how seflies cause deaths, when it's really about just being smart about how you take the selfie.


And that's sad, she seemed really in love with Spain. Even took the time to learn the language.

Always kind of grim how someone's plans, even for the next day, gets wiped from existence.

There's no doubt this is sad, but it's also incredibly pathetic. If you're willing to risk life and limb and do dangerous things like scale the outside of bridges for something as meaningless as a selfie, then I have no real qualms about natural selection taking it's course.

Like that guy in Australia who fell off of a balcony planking. If you lack the intelligence and tact to not dangle your body off of precarious locations for the sake of a picture or bragging rights, you're probably not smart enough to survive regardless. Humans prove Charles Darwin right day after day with shit like this.
