I used fibre-tip pens:

About the how-to: First I made the contour of the squirrel. Then I decided where the shading would go. LAter I chose one base color -depending of the area, diff base color for hat, fur and gabardine- and a set for shades plus a lighter one. Made lots of points and hoped the squirrel would still look like one after erasing the lines xd

Don't know Secret Squirrel, but it's very nicely done!
Wanted to ask how you did that, until I scrolled down and noticed you already had given the answer xd
