Scooby Doo

A horror story

Part 1

It was a cold Friday night, the 13th of September. A fresh breeze was blowing along the seashore, crawling up to the hill towering upon the coastline, playing with the autumn leaves. The gust reached up to the second floor of the mansion that was built upon the hill, and suddenly shook the windows of the room which was right above the entrance of the house. Mrs. Elsworth woke up with a start.

Ever since Mr. Elsworth died last year, this old lady had noone else left but his son. John Elsworth was in his mid forties, jobless, and spent most of his time wasting his mother’s allowance. He returned to the Elsworth Mansion after his father’s death, now sleeping in his bedroom right next to his mother’s.

Whenever Mrs. Elsworth could not sleep, or at times of unease and loneliness, she called for his son to comfort her. Although John has never been more than a parasite, these two people have learnt to live in a symbiosis: it was more like the relation of a mentor and a client. The former one, being the mother, feeding her first born child with money, and at the same time, feeding on his companionship.

There were three other persons in the mansion, sharing this atmosphere full of tension: the newly hired butler,Thomas Jewlser; Katie Kain, the maid, and Jack, the old gardener. We also have to mention Charlie, the parrot, who could cite nothing but the ABC. He was Jack’s bird. Old man Jack has been serving the Elsworth family for decades now, he has seen the Elsworth sons growing up, then he witnessed one of them dying at the age of 20, the other one becoming a shame of his family, and he also dug the grave for Mr. Elsworth last September. It has almost been a year.

Mrs. Elsworth turned on the lamp. The rays of light reached out into the night, casting a dim light upon the bald tree in front of the house. It was eerily waving its branches, its shadows were dancing with the leaves whirling in the hustling wind. It seemed as if the light was fighting with the darkness over the souls of the dead leaves. There were no stars visible this night, and the Moon was hidden by clouds, watching over the silence of the night. Only the whistling of wind tore into the texture of this deadly silence covering the Elsworth Mansion.

Mary Elsworth shivered as she heard the wind knocking on the window again. She was thinking about calling for his son, as normally, but this time she changed her mind. „Let him rest”- she thought. She looked at the photo on the shelf next to her bed. It was an old photography of the family, with her beloved husband and their sons on it. She shed a tear. „The anniversary is next week”-memories started to flood her mind. The wind kept on pushing against the glass, but Mrs. Elsworth was not paying attention.

Suddenly the windows shut wide open. She snapped out of her reminiscence, and looked at the direction of the loud noise. The glass broke into pieces, covering the floor. And then she saw it. It was the most grotesque face she has ever seen. A pale complexion, almost white. A huge scar on the right cheek. And two glowing eyes, one of them being yellow, the other being red. Two eyes, set upon her, two eyes glaring into her eyes, capturing her soul. Mrs. Elsworth wanted to scream out loudly, but she only managed to let out a feeble shriek. The Phantom stepped inside the room. The shards of glass were squeaking under his feet. He was wearing a raggy black coat, and as he was moving towards Mrs. Elsworth, he raised a knife in his left hand. Mrs. Elsworth instinctively tried to hide her face with her hands, but it was too late. One minute later everything was covered in blood, and the Phantom was gone, as if by the wind, that blew some leaves into the room. The clouds dispersed, allowing the Moon to take a look at the scenery. It shone onto the pieces of broken glass and the puddles of blood, making them glistening: white and red blending with the silent night. Then the clouds hid the moonlight again: darkness won over light.

On the lonely road leading the way to Village Town, a van was crossing through, alongside the seashore. It was the weirdest vehicle to be seen: it was painted blue and green with patches of orange flowers. A huge painting on its sides read: The Mystery Machine.

„Hey Scoob, give me that hot-dog from over the back seat”- said a young guy wearing green shirt, turning towards the huge brown Great Dane.

„Yeah yeah, here you go”- answered the dog, and opened the picnic basket in the back of the van, but instead of handing it over to the disheveled guy, he ate it all himself.

„No fair”- whined the guy.

„Let it go Shaggy, we’ll soon reach the hotel, there you get full board”- said the blonde guy who was driving.

„Yes guys, just stay still for a few more hours”-added a girl wearing glasses.

"We’ll have an awesome time at the beach, I can’t wait to bathe in the Sun”- said the beautiful girl next to the driver.

„It seems the weather is fine as well. If only the landscape was not so plain.”- remarked Fred, the driver.

„Look, look”-barked the dog pointing towards a strange figure creeping in the shadows of the rocks about a hundred metres away.

The figure looked like a corpse that has just escaped its graveyard. The company turned their heads toward it, and as they were speeding on, they got closer and closer. They passed him from a few dozen metres, and his unearthly and unhuman appearance dazzled the friends of Mystery Inc.

„What the hell was that?”- burst out Shaggy when they passed the Phantom.

„I have no idea, but let’s get as far away as possible”-said Velma, the brownie with glasses. „Fred, speed up.”

But just as she finished her sentence, they felt a huge bump, and the car broke down.

„What the…”-Fread freaked out.- „Of all the times and places…”

„Uhm, guys, we’ve got another problem”-said Shaggy, as he was looking out of the window of the car. „That thing is coming this way.”

Fred tried to restart the engines, but the machine was totally broke. „Come on, not this”-said Fred with a tone of anxiety in his voice.

„What do we do now?”-asked Daphne.

„I suggest the good old trick: let’s run away”-suggested Shaggy.

„Yeah, yeah, I’m with you”-said Scooby.

„And where should we run to?”-asked Velma.

„To that castle-like building up there”-answered Shaggy.- „It’s only a few hundred yards. Let’s get going guys before this ghost catches up to us”

„G-g-ghooost?”- yawled Scooby.

„Calm down Scooby, ghosts don’t exist. I say we fight this thing.”-said Fred.

„You can’t be serious! No way I’m gonna stay!”-replied Shaggy.

„We got to do something, and right now. I say we hide in that castle”-said Daphne.”If we have to fight, we have better chances of protecting ourselves there.”

„That’s my girl, Daphne!”-rejoiced Shaggy.-„Now let’s keep movin’!”
In the meantime the Phantom was closing on the gang, its menacing shape drawing nearer and nearer. The gang got out of the Mystery Machine. As the Phantom was only a couple of yards away, they could see a knife in his hand, and blood on his clothes.

„Yayks! It’s going to kill us! Let’s run!”- cried Shaggy and started to run with Scooby Doo. The rest of the gang followed them. In a few minutes, they reached the top of the hill and stopped in front of the gate of the mansion. A rusty board informed them of the name of the place: Elsworth Mansion. The gate was open. They hurried inside, then ran to the huge door. The window above was broken. They rang the bell and loudly knocked on the door.

„Who’s there?”-the voice of an old man asked.

„Sir, our car broke down, and a strange apparition is after us. Please let us in!”

They heard a key turn in the lock. The door opened.
