After rereading the final few chapters and having a think about the series in general, I came to the conclusion that Sasuke hasn't abandoned his ideals of protecting people in the shadows, nor has he gave up on becoming the immortal overlord of the Narutoverse. Sasuke just knows at this moment in time, if he fights with Naruto it will end in a stalemate thus destroying his plans.
But this doesn't mean that Sasuke has given up the ghost, oh no
This scan suggests that Sasuke is merely biding his time until he aquires the power to overwhelm Naruto but even if they remain as equals forever Sasuke has a plan B for that eventuality and that plan is none other than Naruto's son, Boruto.
Here we see Sasuke mention how immortality is in his hands thanks to him having the rinnegan. I think we all know that he is alluding to the fact that he can manipulate someone into using gedo rinnei tensei to revive him, much the same way Madara planned with Obito.
This is not as farfetched as it seems. If the rumors for the new Boruto movie are true, Sasuke will be Boruto's mentor, someone who is very close to him. Now we all know that Boruto hates his father
and is desperately crying out for a father figure, perhaps he'll find that in Sasuke? And Sasuke will exploit this relationship and the darkness inside Boruto's heart.
Not to mention that Boruto is one of very few living shinobi who possesses the required attributes to be able to control a rinnegan: strong chakra and eye power.
And let's get this straight, since his fight with Naruto Sasuke has NEVER shown any real signs of converting to Narutoism. His ideals of protecting the world in the shadows have been shown to still be intact in the Last when saved Konoha and then sped off and in the epilogue chapter in the manga where he is shown to be on some business presumably outside of Konoha (still not wearing a headband, if I may add).
The revolution is still on! Viva Sasuke!
