Actually put both parts together and that's his resolve. He did gain clarity but only because of Hashi. He want's to protect Kohona as Hokage as well. But you're right, it was thanks to itachi's words and his feelings toward Kohona that helped Sasuke

Agreed right there, if it wasn't for hashirama/itachi, he would still being a bad guy.

TRRUUUU. Sasuke isn't a credible protagonist at all, regardless of the things people might perceive as positive. He's been selfish all along and will continue to be after Kishi reveals that he isn't truly good.
