Yes, Sasuke was a bit stronger than Naruto then, but he had already practically caught up to him. That's why Sasuke mentioned he would like to fight with Naruto - if he hadn't been convinced of Naruto's progress, he wouldn't have bothered saying that.
Uchihas don't bother with weak people and don't pay them any special mind. That's why Naruto was so happy when Sasuke told him that; it was basically Sasuke saying he considered Naruto good enough as a real rival to fight and that he considered him strong enough to be a worthy opponent.

First off thanks for giving me a decent debate , been hard to find on this thread . sasuke did acknowledge naruto but i think sasuke thought he was a step ahead of him

Yes, after Sasuke woke up in the hospital and saw how strong Naruto had gotten, he had indeed gotten the idea in his mind that Naruto had managed to suddenly surpass him. That combined with the fact that his brother had defeated him again and had told him again that he was not strong enough was, I think, the trigger that finally made Sasuke give in fully to the Curse mark. I believe he tried to fight the effects of the mark at first, but after seeing how strong Naruto had gotten in a short time and having his brother pointing out his weak points again, he probably thought that giving in to the Curse mark would be benificial to him. He decided to take the risks, involving the usage of the Curse mark, just so that he could get more power and stay ahead of Naruto.

But all in all, I believe it was the Curse mark that actually contributed the most to making him leave the village. He seemed content with the training he received during his time with Team seven (he probably would have demanded for more severe training later on though) but it was only when the Curse mark showed him what he could accomplish when he used the power that the hatred grew stronger and ultimately took over, though it apparently didn't cloud his mind wholly, as shown by his refusal of killing Naruto at the Valley of the End after Naruto had lost consciousness.

I agree the curse mark plus the other factors you mentioned played a roll. But eventually the power he wanted he couldnt have gotten from studying under kakashi and the leaf since they are (good guys) no forbidden techs etc. He only played nice with oro until he learned what he wanted ,than (understandbly killed him) regardless of morality power is what he wanted most .

I still think his hate for itachi contributed the most to him leaving .

Well I would say he never was good or evil. He was at more of a medium between the two. All he cared about when the manga first started was getting strong enough to kill Itachi. And at that moment that wasnt evil because Itachi was wanted by the leaf. After that he left with Oro because he new he needed more training to kill Itachi and he wouldnt get training like that from the leaf. So first kind of evil move lol. Then he trained until Naruto kept hunting him down where he would show his power and then leave. Sasuke defeated Oro for the moment so that was good. Then ended up killing members of Akatsuki really good. Joined Tobi but the leaf did kill his clan lol so thats neutral to me. If someone made your brother kill everyone in your clan I would be out for revenge as well.

Sasuke is truly a good guy, but he just chose to follow the wrong path.

He's walked a fine line and I love his story for it, but Sasuke is too far down the road to turn back. Sasuke is showing the elements of a tragic character from a writing perspective. His redemption might come in the form of death. Joining a group of S rank ninjas, invading the Cloud Village, trying to take Killer Bee, attacking the Gokage summit, and killing a Hokage canidate that was named the 6th Hokage is too much. This arc with the scroll and the new Taka should determine the path he takes, but he's gone too far over to be saved.

I still think his hate for itachi contributed the most to him leaving .

In a way yes because I don't think the curse mark would have had much effect if Sasuke hadnt let his hatred towards his brother fester. It's the hatred that made the curse mark so powerful. But he probably wouldn't have chosen to leave with Orochimaru if he hadn't encountered Itachi again, who showed him he was still too weak to win against his brother and if Orochimaru hadn't forced upon him the curse mark.

Well technically itachi was thought to be evil at the time so there was no wrong with sasuke wanting to kill itachi.

Sasuke has always been the anti-hero type. He's actually more like a "bad boy" stock character in a soap opera. One wrong conversation, and he goes from playing hooky and "borrowing" his dad's car to a pulling startling season 4 finale type cliffhanger like doing meth or participating in a bank robbery.

THIS THIS THIS THIS THIS THIS THIS THIS THIS! Could not put it better myself.

I completely agree with you.
It's true that he has developed feelings for his comrades, but that has changed over time.
Yes he has indeed thought of team seven, when he fought against killer bee, but he tried to kill sakura twice. And would have killed naruto if sai wouldn't have gone in between.
He broke the connection to team seven. Sasuke himself said that he has only one bond. The bond to Itachi.
But nevertheless..
I think that sasuke will sacrifice himself for Naruto, and then apologize to him. Then he will be buried in Konoha..
Naruto becomes Hokage and marries Hinate. The End :D
But earnestly ..it would be sad if he dies as a bad guy.
The manga should have a happy ending :)
