The Rinnegan and Sharingan were once one. The juubi's eye. The rinnegan and and sharingan are just weaker variants of this. They both came from the same eye.
After Kaguya got the eye from the God Tree the eye spilt somewhere in the gene code, resulting in sosp getting tomoeless eyes (rinnegan) and Indra inheriting the tomoe ( sharingan) because the sage still carried the genes for it. With that being said it's neither sharingan nor rinnegan but simply the juubi's eye.
