Sasuke is one of the most hated characters in the Naruto Universe. From what I’ve seen, these are the main reasons why.
1) Sasuke is Naruto’s rival, and Naruto is the main character. Being the main character, people like Naruto, and therefore, they feel that they must hate Sasuke on principal.
2) Sasuke is an overall “mean” person, who mistreated those who cared about him, such as Sakura and Karin.
3) Sasuke is a “villain”. Many people always hate the villain in the story.
4) Sasuke betrayed Konoha and now wants to destroy it
4.5) Sasuke wants to destroy Konoha for Itachi, even though Itachi’s goal was to protect it.
Obviously the fact that Sasuke is Naruto’s rival is not a reason to dislike him. What I feel that I really need to address is the rest of the problems.
All of these reasons are not reasons to hate a fictional character. I view fictional characters by their character, emotions, development and overall how interesting they are. I will never claim that Sasuke is a “good” person or that his actions are justified, but all of the things Sasuke has done, everyone he’s betrayed, and all of his hatred and pain are what makes him a great literary character.
Sasuke has had the most fluctuations in his character out of any other character.
1) He started off as an arrogant person, who was also antisocial and reclusive
2) He later started to get closer to his teammates and began to care about Naruto and Sakura.
3) When Naruto started to become powerful, he became insecure and angry. He began to resent Naruto and even distance himself from Sakura. This was increased by his anger that Itachi seemed to care more about Naruto than him.
4) Sasuke left Konoha. He did not hate Naruto and Sakura, he actually still had feelings for them, but his anger made him feel that he had to leave.
5) At the beginning of part two, he seemed to have lost him feelings for Naruto and Sakura. On the other hand he still refused to kill innocent people and began to bond with his new teammates
6) When he found out the truth about Itachi, massive hatred and anger built inside of him. He still retained feelings for his teammates.
7) Sasuke’s anger and Hatred increased to a level where nothing, not innocent lives, or even his teammates, could stand in the way of his revenge.
8) After Sasuke teamed up with Itachi he started to have doubts. He still hates Konoha, but doubts his overall purpose as a shinobi and what his future actions should be.
Sasuke has deep rooted emotional issues that make him an appealing character. He has had a lot of character development. It was mostly negative development which is what makes it more unique and stimulating. I don’t dislike Naruto, but Naruto is the archetypal protagonist and I find Sasuke more fascinating.
I will now explain why Sasuke wants to destroy Konoha, despite Itachi’s wishes. He feels that Konoha used and coerced Itachi to destroy his clan, and lived peacefully at the cost of the slaughter of Itachi amd the Uchiha clan, and even hated Itachi for it. Is Sasuke justified? No. But his emotions and internal conflict over his brother and former comrades is what makes him such an interesting character.
