Sasori has no brain! He carry's out all thought processes like a human does and is an elite ninja who conquered nations with puppets alone, yet he has no brain. Itachi rely on his brain to carry out his thoughts and actions where as Sasori is so much more intelligent that he can operate without one and do the same stuff.

He didn't lose. Chiyo said herself he could have defeated them. He was just emotionally torn after seeing his parent puppets and decided YOLO and let granny kill him. That does not make him any less smarter. Nice try though.
