People think there couldn't be clans back then because there was no ninjutsu, but this is wrong. A clan is basically a family, so if your last name is say jimmy, you'd be from the jimmy clan, so clans such as the uzumaki or hyuga COULD have existed during the sages time. saying the sage isn't from a calm is like saying he has no heritage or lineage
