Lee didn't even open all 8 n he ended up in the hospital with a great chance of never being a ninja again.

Gaara played a role in injuring Lee but if you remember or look back to that part even Kakashi noted that the muscles in Lees arms and legs were tearing before Gaara even got a hold on him. Anyways my point was that injuries like that are not a risk when using sage mode.
