Explanation:
Earth release or Doton, is one of the 5 basic elements that is used in the NB RP and is one of the natural elements in Real Life. It allows you to manipulate earth for offensive or defensive purposes. It is often considered as an element of sturdiness and durability. It can act as a defense against powerful waves of water, gusts of wind, fire and it can also protect against numerous weapons. Its strong against water, its natural ability to prevent water from passing through it whilst passing through water itself is a reason for this. However, its weakness is lightning because lightning, due to the penetrative abilities, can break up the earth and cause its composition to be disarranged.
This element can be used a sturdy solid or it can be used as a muddy adhesive like variant. The mud-variant is most commonly used along with Fire to form pseudo-lava (molten mud), making for a very dangerous substance. Due to having physical substance, Doton can be shaped into numerous structures from defensive walls to jagged spikes etc.
In terms of the terrain based advantage,it can used to manipulate the ground around or beneath your opponent, allowing you to successfully perform your technique. Earth natured chakra chakra is a component in the Wood Release kekkei genkai and the Lava Release Kekkei Genkai.

It seems that you understand it quite well, one more thing is the relationship between earth release and the terrain. If you're fighting on the ocean, there would be many earth techniques you're not able to use, because most of them need an earth source as well. Not all of them though.

Here grab this piece of paper. This piece of paper is made out of a special tree, grown and fed with chakra. Gather your doton chakra and concentrate very good. Channel your chakra into the piece of paper, until the paper will turn into dirt and crumbles away.

I start to gather and concentrate and focus my doton chakra.I try to channel my chakra into the paper. 1 Minutes passes...then 2 minutes...then finally after channeling my focused chakra into the paper, the paper turns into dirt and starts crumbling away*
