Alright, this thread is NOT about Itachi's skills, NOT about his power, NOT about his intellect, NOT about his difficult life, it's about his morality.
Itachi worked for the greater good, that's true, but his attitude through all of the series was "the end justifies the means".
I'm not even talking about Uchiha massacre, because it's not a good example - the Uchiha were plotting something evil, so, arguably, killing them was not as controversial thing to do.
However, there are many more examples of Itachi simply not giving a f**k about other, not evil, people.
Even if Itachi claimed he did not want to kill the leaf ninja, as soon as he found out how much Kakashi knew, he was more than willing to allow for their death. In fact, he HIMSELF ordered Kisame to kill them and if it wasn't for Guy's arrival (of which Itachi did not know, because, as he himself stated, he is not a sensor), Kisame would have taken Kakashi out, and possibly Asuma and Kurenai as well.
Then again, Itachi actively HELPED the Akatsuki in capturing the Jinchuuriki, which not only fulfilled the organization's goals but also, simply speaking, was killing of innocent people.
I know some might say:
"Well, he could not stop all of Akatsuki, damnit. He was a spy, he needed to act hidden. He couldn't just stop Akatsuki from capturing jinchuuriki!"
That is perfectly true. But you should think - what are the aims of a spy? The most obvious answers would be:
1. To collect intel on the subject and deliver it to employers (the village in this case)
2. To sabotage the actions performed by the group in which he acts as a spy
We've already established that Itachi did not sabotage any of Akatsuki's actions. So, did he at least deliver any information about Akatsuki to the village? Not at all. The only info Konoha got on Akatsuki came from Jirayia and other Konoha ninja.
In other words:
1. Itachi became Akatsuki spy, but didn't actually do anything against the organization
2. While a member of Akatsuki, he was willing to kill innocent people and allowed for all of its actions (partially related to point 1)
There were two things Itachi cared about - Sasuke and the village. However, while Itachi cared for the "village", he was willing to kill its members if need be. Sure, if he didn't really need to (aka if Akatsuki didn't need to), he wouldn't, but, as we could see, even such a small excuse as Kakashi knowing about the organization was enough to order Kisame to kill him.
And one final question - it is obvious Itachi thought the end justifies the means. But if that's the case, in what way is he different from Obito in terms of morality? Obito, after all, also wants to achieve the world peace and generally his motives are not evil at all. His actions are.
