[Discussion] Racism ruins Superheroes and characters

Japan is WHOLE other situation my friend. Unlike the West, specifically the US, where multiculturalism is promoted and championed, Japan has gone to extreme lengths to keep primarily Japanese. Why do you think their population is starting to go down and anime lacks diversity, because everyone over there is following an accepted standard.

Basically another point I want to bring up is that while it is right to champion equally in comics, it is true that changing the identities of classic superheros is wrong. Its only force feeding audiences something that just doesn't seem legit. I feel its better just to start from scratch than to wildly change a pre-written story.

What i'm talking about is people trying to say so and so is white, so lets have some black superheroes.. and the matter of the fact here is that there many other races except just black and white. So why is it that only these 2 races get to be focused on? rofl. This is still the funniest shit to me till this day.. Let me give you an example of how this has ruined superheroes.

Superman: Hes an alien, he has no human race. Yet for some reason, i always hear people saying "we need a black counter-part of superman, cause thats just selling white man." See now while i'm hearing this all I feel is being insulted.. So you are saying superman just has to be white or black? He can't be brown (which most of the recent versions of superman have his skin as.)? Yet the realty of the matter is WE DIDN'T GIVE A F*CK ABOUT HIS RACE WHEN WE WATCHED HIM OR READ HIS COMICS...

^^^ See that is just an example of what i'm talking about. It is so idiotic in comics and movies and cartoons when people talk about race they only mention whites and blacks. Either don't talk about any of them, or consider all of them.

Whats more worst is when people try to change the "race" of a superhero... Wally west and Human torch being the number 1 for this.. Really? So basically what this is telling me they don't give a **** about the african-american superheroes that were already made and added to the comics.. i mean yo people worked hard to create them. Show some respect. Yo Marvel, where BLACK PANTHER AT?! We been waiting on that dude for a long ass time. Yet they don't wanna focus on someone who is already of that color. :vincent: Yo DC, instead of making Wally West black, why not focus on John Stewart ? << The more popular green lantern for current times.

What about static shock? People loved static shock.. Yet my boy got nothing...

They literally butchered Wally West in the NEW 52.

But yo what is your opinion regarding race and comics. Do you also find that when racism or race is put into comics all the other races besides black and white are kind of basically ignored? Does it not make you feel awkward when people seperate someone like Superman into races? Tell me of your point of view on this.

I agree. DC is just being stupid. Promote or create heroes of different race. Don't just change what you have. I think it'll blow over, but it's okay if it doesn't. It's a different interpretation of a character. My Wally isn't the same as someone elses and their Wally doesn't change my experience with mine. So, I care, but I don't at the same time.

Imo all characters should be drawn with some non realistic skin colors like sakura's hairs XD just kidding...
If the characters are pink, blue, cyan, magenta etc .. then this dispute will end forever i think.... if its not then i will also be thinking there is no brown guy in comics :|

This time I agree with you ...I find it idiotic how Hollywood wants to be hip & change the races of characters that are already establish ...like Human torch etc , people are not happy about this & it's nt about being racist , it's about changing the character's background , It's like Naruto being black in movies just because :/ .

I don't understand why they don't go with the other green lantern after Jordan was already ruin , but we'll see where it goes , Black Panther is gonna happen & there's the cyborg guy from DC that already got cast , but Yeah .

What's wrong with the whole Human Torch thing? Michael B. Jordan's a great actor and I'm eager to see how it works out in the movie.

And why's changing a pre-created character's race a big deal to you, anyways? I understand the purists out there, but it's not always a bad thing. Michael Clarke Duncan in Daredevil, I give you that one, but can't nobody tell me that Morgan Freeman wasn't the ONLY choice for Red in Shawshank Redemption (not a comic, but it still fits this discussion).

Because there are alot of Black superheroes they could focus on , instead of changing the ones that already exist.

You need to take into consideration a lot of things. Firstly these characters were created in a time when other races weren't accepted in the mainstream media so of course the classic characters are going to be white. Just because they were a product of their time doesn't mean they can't bend a little bit, you ever heard of alternate universes? Nick Fury still exists as not Samuel L Jackson. Truth is had all these characters been invented in a more open minded time there's no saying what they'd look like.

I do however disagree with making the Torch black and keeping Sue white. They are brother and sister from the same parents, unless they plan to change who his father was which would be an even bigger mistake. They should be the same race whichever race that is they should be the same.

Static Shock has had a show and so has Cyborg from the Teen Titans. You're acting as if they've been completely ignored. The only thing I have with changing story lines like they did with Wally and stuff is if it's in main continuity. If it's a parallel Earth have at it, but i agree changing established characters and continuity is just a cheap attempt at pandering in hopes of bringing in new clients, it's the same that they've been doing with sexual orientation turning alternate Universe Alan Scott gay and Batwoman etc. etc. It's not so much a problem when the story feels natural but when it feels like an obvious push for ratings and appearances than it's usually done poorly.

I didn't even mention Superman but he does have a "colored" counterpart in J'onn J'onzz. Also a lot of them can have their skin color changed and not their past i.e. Barry Allen could be a black forensics investigator who watched his mother die and his father wrongfully blamed then gets hit by a lightning bolt while near his chemicals, that doesn't change the story of Barry at all, but playing with the origin story and established events like they did with Wally regardless of skin color is annoying, like how they made Bart Allen an alien or future kid or whatever it was and called him Bar T'orr. Stuff like that annoys me more than changing a skin tone, probably because it rarely happens in the comics, that's a much more movie prevalent issue.

They don't do it to "create a more balanced universe" either, that's just PR. They do it to increase ticket sales and avoid accusations of bigotry. It's pandering at it's finest, a company listens to a minority with little to no vested interest in the company, alters their methods or product and ignores the continued loyal supporters complaints. I don't care that they're being changed it's the why they're being changed I take issue with. So go ahead make T'challa White, big deal, there's white people in Africa, at least balance it out, every white character played by a black actor for Hollywood should have a reciprocal, Falcon should have been Edward Norton, Rhodes should have been Statham etc. etc.
