In my AP literature and composition class, we read 'Self-Reliance by Ralph Waldo Emerson' and I liked what he said in a specific paragraph.

Here's the quote:

"The other terror that scare us from self-trust is out consistency; a reverence for our past acts or words because the eyes of others have no data for computing our orbit than out past acts, and we are loth to dissapoint them."

As we read, it caught my eyes, so I end up writing it down for self pleasure more than anything.

How many of you can relate or agree with the quote?

Edited:
To emphasize my point, I'll say that at times when I make mistakes and try to learn from them and strive to be a better person or change my ways yet those who I've hurt or made myself look bad in front of, CANT accept the change and forever see me as a bad person.

Any of you feel like that? or had that happen?

Does it mean, that everyday you have to live up to the expectations of what "your past self" did well in whatever aspect of your life ?

If it does, then i can relate to it but at the same time think its irrelevant to me.

In a way yes.
Stuff like that has happened to me and probably most.
But then again no because I don't tend to think like that.

I disagree. Our consistency doesn't scare us from self-trust, it's actually doing the opposite.

My problem in rl right there. A certain quarrel occured between me and my friends in high school, then we parted due to several reasons (either moving to another school or post-graduation were accepted in different universities or moving out of the country). Well, I have changed since that time (became more mature and care more for people than myself; actually barely give a bother about myself) still, they remember my immaturity and childish-like attitude till now, and have no problem calling me a meanie just because they have enough leisure-time to open their mouths and hurt people.

Now, I live knowing that they will never understand a thing about me due to them being trapped in false judgements from the past and not giving any space for mending a single crack there. But, I'm not that bothered about it, I love them and nothing will change it :)

So, yes. I think that I do relate to that quote in a way or another. Much thanks for the nice thread :)

I can related.
What's in are past is basically in the past it's hard to leave the past buts that's all you have to Move Forward in order for people to move in they can't be relying on past mistakes and regrets. That does not make a person grow. It can make a person stumble and cause a breaking point in life. What you do in Your life affects you and everyone around you.
Don't worry about the past worry about the future! Keep looming forward cause we can turn back time, we are human of course!

If I understand, people only judge because they only see our past?

The story is about looking past that and always trying to be yourself than being someone else or dwelling too much in those mistakes, but the author explains that the reason some people cant achieve self trust is because of that. Not saying that it's the same for everyone but at times when I do thing that may seem 'wrong' to others, people seem to take that as account to who I am when in reality, it's but a mere part of me.

I don't either but if I ever sit down and wonder about life. I see how someone people are just like that quote, or try to put me to be in it. I actually do agree with it b/c of how some see my past actions wrong.

 you're not a meanie, you're a great person in my book! and yeah, what you pretty much said it. I had that happen to me, not often since I'm not a bad person or anything and I don't get too close to my friends.
