Ever since I saw Tsunade summon Katsuya, I've always had this thought. You got jiraiya and his samurai frogs, orochimaru and his snakes, but why does Tsunade have slugs? Why is the other group of sages have to be slugs? It's just weird IMO.

Why not ? She is the best medical nin ever, so she needs to have a summoning to accommodate that, nothing else.

The Sannin are based off of an Old Japanese folklore:
Jiraiya Gōketsu Monogatari (児雷也豪傑物語?, "The Tale of the Gallant Jiraiya")
He is a ninja who uses shapeshifting magic to morph into a gigantic toad. As the heir of a powerful clan in Kyūshū of the same name, Jiraiya fell in love with Tsunade (綱手), a beautiful young maiden who masters snail magic. His arch-enemy was his one-time follower Yashagorō (夜叉五郎), later known as Orochimaru (大蛇丸), who mastered serpent magic (the kanji 大蛇 literally mean "giant snake" or "serpent").

She needs a slug? Why not something that is more associated with healing, like... Huh, the only animal I can think of is a leech. >.<

Perhaps it's because slugs have healing properties?

It's true.. it's a Japanese Folklore. the title is Tale of The Gallant Jiraiya. If you search it on google you can find it.

Just a quick web search would have proven that the info in wikipedia about Jiraiya Goketsu Monogatari is right.
Saying crap just for the sake of wanting to seem "cool" is so mainstream...

In college most of my teachers relied heavily on wikipedia (some of them being active collaborators), it's just easier to find the info collected in one place, if one needs a deeper approach wikipedia has sources at the final section of most entries; or that's where google comes into play.

Jesus Christ...
