^^This. Also the U.S. is Finally putting in plans to greatly scale back. I am sure there are certain internal elements that are not happy about this and want their army base to stay open. A quick phone call, a little coordinated effort with a frienemy and suddenly that base stays open. Not gonna work this time.

This could get interesting.

Russia - or, more properly, Putin - engaging in a westward expansion directly threatens one of my interests. It would be one thing if Russia were simply expanding its influence via market factors - but this is a direct military expansion in support of an increasingly tyrannical Russian administration.

Normally, I'm content to let Putin be Putin and let Russians take care of Russia. But I do have to say that I've enough personal interest at stake should Russia begin expanding westward that I will likely not remain neutral.

Just so happens that I've been working on taking up Serbian. A mercenary career in the Balkans could likely sate the wanderlust I've been feeling of late.

How much do said mercenaries get paid?
And would there possibly be a need for an expert in tactical questioning and psychological operations?

he's probably afraid that the ukraine rebelion will spread out into russia. "terrorists" are how they like to call rebels and this is a drill against "terrorist attacks".

well, at least you stopped trying to convince us the US market crashed.

For what I have at stake? The only price I have is that the Balkans remain free of Russian totalitarianism. Maybe the IRS would consider it charity that I could write off on my W-2 or something.

I figured I could do more consulting on air defense grids and maintenance on tactically acquired Russian airframes. Possibly even try and serve as a liason for any NATO operations in the area - but that would be if I make some kind of name for myself worth paying attention to (arrogance on my part).

Which is probably a bit more dangerous of a game than I'd like to play - my allegiances to a particular individual are stronger than my allegiances to the governing body of this country (which is starting to look eerily close to The Republic under Palpatine). The bigger the name I make - the farther up on the list I move of people to send special forces after.

If the local up and coming warlords don't off me in the first place. Those regions are still somewhat new to the idea of limited governments - so governments tend to be one giant game of duck-duck-goose for who gets to be the totalitarian overlord.

So I'd probably spend most of my time helping to train partisans in what I know of the special operations side of things - small squad tactics and how to be a pain in the ass too small to deal with conventionally but too debilitating to ignore. Also try and pass on what I know of base construction and how to more effectively collect information on military targets - how to spot complacency and overconfidence, how to instill paranoia, how to maximize the demoralizing effect of strikes on garrison forces, etc.

If I go - I fully expect a return to the U.S. would include my detainment at the airport and a military tribunal for a welcoming party. Perhaps none of my actions would catch the ire of our political system - but I'm already a Christian-affiliating, Libertarian-leaning 'white' male... so the odds are not in my favor, there.

As far as tactical questioning and psy-ops - I'm sure there's some interrogation that can be done on captured people.

World War isn't possible in this era, it would have to come to an stalemate very quickly.

And with The Budapest Memorandum hanging over some heads, Britain can't afford to get into war and so, we look to words.

You wanna know how to kill enemy morale?
Always target the chow hall and always attack at night when the bulk of mother****ers are sleeping...or playing Madden. That shit always pissed me off.
You know seeing as I'm half Asian that might just be enough for them to try to pin me as a spy for NK. **** it. I'll just ride my clearance for six figures when they kick me out. All hail the Emperor.

That is okay... but it's a little straight-forward.

Study and pick out the young ones. Drop one with a single shot. Disappear for two days. Ambush a roving patrol. Go dark for a week. Pick off a guy on the gate. Small squad assault at night - press a over-committed automatic mount (make them worry about their coverage).

Secure a fair amount of anti-air weaponry (plenty of it floating around over there). Press a mobile operation enough to provoke allocation of rotary wings - saturate it with anti-air, drop a few - fade.

If they deploy the equivalent of a C-RAM to deter mortars, hit their periphery with shallow-angle shots. Maybe get clever and package explosives into a rocket-propelled tire.

The key thing is to not be afraid to lose ground. Move with the refugees, work with minimal weapons stockpiles - make them feel as if they fight the very air they breathe. Specifically provoke responses of the 'infantry's best friend' when you have the capability to wound or defeat it. Avoid giving them the perception of victory.

What they broadcast back home will always be tales of triumph - but that will even further demoralize the front line that is all too aware of the distortions made by their political leaders back home. Target the younger - let them die with letters to be sent home to a sweet-heart that will never see them again. Let the older and more experienced see their sons die before their eyes and their daughters widowed while Putin claims victory over a people who only wanted a government that respected their life choices.

Let them be reminded of the hundreds of thousands - possibly millions - who died while Stalin boasted of greatness, of the corruption they revolted against.

The trick to a good mind-****? Presenting that which is true in an indirect, unsettling way.

You know seeing as I'm half Asian that might just be enough for them to try to pin me as a spy for NK. **** it. I'll just ride my clearance for six figures when they kick me out. All hail the Emperor.

For... who to try and pin you as a spy for NK?

The Balkan areas tend to be rather suspicious of outsiders to begin with. Much of their experience has to do with the world making their problems its business, sending people to help blow things up only to leave. I can't really blame them.

But we are being invited to this romp&stomp. Hell - even if the military downsizes, our society has some of the best trained combatants on the face of the planet - I imagine they will find a means of bartering that service/expertise in the absence of an official U.S. response.

Re: Putin tells Russian Armed Forces to "get ready" for east-west "conflict"

I'm concerned that Europe won't respond in a strong enough fashion, having "grave" concerns and airing them to Russia will have about as much impact as lobbing water balloons.

Putin seems to think he can do anything, what happens when they start deciding that because Europe won't do anything they'll start taking more and more steps.

I don't know about fighting like some other posters in this discussion but I am truly mystified how Europe thinks that sitting around using words is going to make Russia do anything. Massing troops on the border might make them think twice instead of just charging into Ukraine not caring about the political fallout. (Which they would they did it with Georgia)

Its like their calling Europe's bluff. Without Europe even having the "IDEA" of a bluff in place.
