I know Puppetry is based on charka-string controlled Marionettes, wich are used by (obviously) puppeteers. There are and can exist numerous variations of puppets; Poison weapon throwers, flame launchers, some with even numerous uses. I believe they originate from Sunagakure, and as far as i know, Kankuro, Sasori, Chiyo, Asura Path was also shown to be a puppeteer when alive, Fu was seen using a straw puppet, suggesting he has knowledge in puppetry aswell; I also recon seeing the 3 guys that wanted revenge on Gai using puppetry.

My guess for these different types of puppets aren't what contraptions are in them, but what they're designed for, per se. A flame spitter puppet might be designed for offensive but also defense as well. While they can have a number of different contraptions in them, there are different uses for them. The basic three puppets shown by Kankuro have the best example of what I mean by this.

Crow was considered the offensive puppet, being able to split itself up as well as having numerous traps and tools concealed inside of it. The many different appendages along with it allowed Kankruo to be creative as to what it can do.
Black Ant was the supplementary puppet used, and it's main function was for trapping people inside of him. Again with the multiple appendages, though it's shaped like a barrel and works incredibly well with Crow.
Salamander was the defensive puppet he utilized, and resembled a large lizard. The main defense this puppet used was it's large shield on it's back to defend against relentless attacks, but can also attack using a flamethrower from it's mouth.

That's about it, though I'm sure you can create other archetypes to use, such as a Kamikaze puppet which would explode when getting close, or something developed moreso for flight purposes or underwater.

Asura Path I don't remember using the technique ever, but it was anime only, and I don't consider him to be anything like that. Fu's technique is used purely for his own Yamanaka clan's technique, but it could be hinted towards something like that, but it's not entirely certain. Another one you missed out on is Mukade, the main antagonist from the fourth Naruto Shippuden movie: The Lost Tower. He had special chakra which allowed him to control an army's worth at once, and had a transformation into a special type of puppet which was strong enough to absorb a Rasenshuriken.

I could honestly go on about this forever, but I won't; it'll spoil the fun for you to discover it yourself.

If you don't have any questions, we'll continue.

So next part is that us puppeteers have rules to follow in battle. I'd like for you to go and find these rules and just find the basics for what we need to follow. You can find the majority of them in the Puppetry [ ] and Sasori [ ] restrictions.

To create 1 human puppet one must be S-Class
to create 2 human puppets one must be kage rank.

Max. puppets made from user bios = 2
Dojutsu and kaguya kg won't work as puppets.
Puppet rank is based on bio level taken.
No Customs from the puppets original bio are transferred.
Puppet users may not have shadow clone (other kinds of clone can't control puppets.
1 heart transfer to another puppet only. heart transfer immediately puts the rank of the puppet up to that of the user. the new puppet with the heart can't support 100 puppets as it doesn't have the modifications to do so.)
only 3 puppet summons may be active at any time. (for example you can have the 100 puppets that sasori summoned [as this classes as one summon] and 2 more puppet summons.)
only a maximum of 2 puppets summons may be performed per turn.

EIG would be too fast for puppets.
Aburame, Inuzuka, Yamanaka, Akimichi clans all can't use their specialty techniques as they have different requirements, such as a mind, body, animal companionship/relationships.
A destroyed puppet may be used in your next battle regardless of win or loss.
Space/time techniques, bijuu, sage mode, Hidan and kakuzu techniques all cannot be used either.

When I asked for the relevant rules we have to follow, I didn't mean all the Sasori rules. It's just that a few of the rules we have to follow are in that list for some reason. As standard puppeteers, we can't create Human Puppets and we're not Sasori so a lot of those rules don't apply to us. But anyway, I'll go over the ones which do apply to us.

You can't have a KG/HA or SM/8IG in the same bio. You can however mix puppetry with sensory or smoke.
Pretty simplistic, you can't put in the same biography anything other ability which constitutes as a Kekkei Genkai like Ice or Storm, a Hiden Ability like Nara or Inuzuka, or Sage Mode/Eight Inner Gates. I know you're newer so this doesn't really apply to you, but it's just something to keep in mind for the future if you ever wanted something with Puppetry.

Puppet users may not have shadow clone (other kinds of clone can't control puppets.)
To be quite honest, I'm not entirely sure why this rule is in place. I have a couple theories about it though, discussing it with others. Firstly, Shadow Clones can use any jutsu the user knows, including the Puppetry technique which would be like having more puppeteers for someone to fight against. Secondly, this technique could be considered overwhelming for the other person, having to fight five of one person, with puppets on top of that which would give you a great advantage. The third reason I can think of is that the original puppeteers were never shown with such an ability, so it might stem from that. Regardless, you're not allowed to use standard Shadow Clones. However, since there's a plethora of other clones out there for you to use, you're allowed to use them instead for your techniques.

Only 3 puppet summons may be active at any time. (for example you can have the 100 puppets that sasori summoned [as this classes as one summon] and 2 more puppet summons.)
This is more of a control-based issue rather than anything else which might spring to mind. You've only got ten fingers, so you can only theoretically use ten puppets, but only Chiyo was shown with enough skill to do that. Three puppets is the maximum we can use and kee control over. Though this only applies to three different "summons" per se, Sasori's Parents although they can be summoned seperately only count as a single puppet summon. This rule is always followed unless specified otherwise in the technique, such as Chiyo's Ten Puppet Army of Chikamatsu which is the only puppet which can be out when used.

Only a maximum of 2 puppets summons may be performed per turn.
This is because you have to perform the puppetry technique where you create chakra threads as well, or you'd just have lifeless dolls sitting there for a turn. Consider this more of a guideline than a rule you have to follow, or you'll have a whole turn where nothing happens apart from lifeless puppets sitting there. Though don't count on me for this, but I've asked around and if you're physically carrying the puppet like Kankuro used to in Part I, they can be brought out passively and it not counting towards the limit of techniques per turn.

Any question regarding this so far? If not we'll continue.
Also I recommend you reach Chuunin level (200 posts) before we continue, otherwise I can't teach you about the puppets you can use, and by extension their techniques. :)
