That still doesn't explain why he would deactivate his sharingan, why he would keep his back turned to Hashi, and most importantly why he didn't attempt to kill a Hashi who was seemingly lying on the ground helpless.
Not a Madara fan. I like Hashi, Senju etc better. But I remembered something after seeing the latest chapter.
How in the world did Madara lose to a wood clone when.....

He clearly says here that he could see though his wood clones back in the day. I know this is a weird thing to notice but I remember it because I remember being impressed that Madara was the only one who could see through those clones.
We know Madara fought mainly to get Hashi's cells, and I'm not saying that Madara could beat Hashi, because they fought many times and if Madara could've just killed Hashi and took his cells he would have.
I'm just saying I don't believe that the Wood Clone really worked on Madara. Look at this:

For those of you with a keen eye for detail, you'll notice what I'm talking about. Hashirama was not dead, yet why did Madara not only deactivate his sharingan, but more importantly he kept his back turned on Hashirama?
This is a guy he's fought and lost to countless times, and made it seem like he wanted to do nothing but kill him. Why would he let his guard down and turn his back on an opponent who was clearly still alive. Why didn't he just finish the job?
It's simple. Because he wanted Hashi to deal the final blow.
**Edit** Credit goes to Q of the Sharingan for this find.

On this page we see Madara's sharingan was active and not only that, but he noticed something about Hashirama. That's why you see the two "!!" in the bottom right panel over Madara and the bottem left focuses on Madara's sharingan. He most likey noticed the wood clone here.

The very next page, his Sharingan is suddenly deactivated for no apparent reason.
lol madara may have gotten his cells and lived but how did he live?? Im guessing not too good holding on to life only because u have the cells of the guy who kicked your a$$ how pathetic he should of killed himself after izuna died because him and uchihas are weak fodder compared to senju
Here. Middle panel. It's strange but Hashirama noticed something weird on top of the cliff. Whatever he noticed, that's what helped Madara escape. Also notice how Madara says he will become the darkness of the village. That's a pretty bold statement for someone who's about to die with no means of hope left huh

haha hey no argument there. I'm not saying he lived the life of a king. But he did manage to get the Rinnegan, plus he got most of Hashirama's cool powers to boot. And he wasn't always an old man in a cave. Gotta give the man some credit for that.

Maybe I shouldn't have said "let him win". I'm sure Hashi would've beaten him regardless. I guess gave up trying to kill him would've been a more accurate way of putting it

I already knew that Mokuton Buddha wasn't goin to kill Madara, it's funny how he sliced it hands off so easy. Don't think Madara lost on purpose, more like Kishi made him loose when he could've clearly killed Hashirama.
your not reading the manga chapter correctly. even though it was only the difference of a frame that we see madara's EMS activated and then not actiavated this was actually several hours later. They were both at the point of exhaustion from a very long fight and at this point madara didn't have the stamina to maintain sharingan. SOooooooo madara would have not been able to see through the wood clone jutsu Annnnnddddddd if the god of shinobi said he is certain he killeded madara I am going to believe him.
