Proof that the power scaling is the only thing that made hiruzen look weaker than what he actually is.

If the 5 kages were to fight prime orochimara, edo hashirama, and edo tobirama they would get fodderized again.
Yet, Hiruzen not only held his own against them, but he also stopped them.

Now if you would have put that fight in part 2, everyone knows the fight would have looked more epic and gave hiruzen more credit than the art work of part 1 gave him.
