[Theory] Possible Explanation of The Timeline

I just can't accept that Nagato awakened the Rinnegan on his own, all manga evidence points to the Rinnegan being the next evolution of the EMS. Madara had no reason to lie to Kabuto about giving Nagato the Rinnegan.
Admittedly, there are plot holes that this creates mostly centered around how Madara could have gained his Rinnegan shortly before he died (which was after he met Obito) and at the same time still have given it to Nagato which should happened years before. The only thing that could have happened is that Madara lied about only activated the Rinnegan shortly before he died and that instead he activated it some years before he died.
Note: When Tobi said that he gave Nagato the Rinnegan I think he was talking from Madara's perspective if you know what I mean.
