he is not smarter than Madara..

Actually in terms of battle sense he is. I mean during a fight, not preparing for a war or taking 60 years to see a plan come to fruition, that isn't really 'smart' just patient.

But in terms of battle sense and intelligence Madara isn't that good at all, I mean he can't figure out ways to counter alot of stuff. Minato beat him, Danzo's henchman figured out a way to hit him, Konan almost beat him. So yeah in the heat of battle I just don't see him coming up with great strategies like Minato and Itachi.

Same goes for Shikamaru and Shikaku, they are great tacticians outside of battle but they require too much time to sit and think about what they plan on doing, while Itachi and Minato come up with awesome strategies within seconds.

So in terms of battle intelligence Itachi and Minato are the best. You can argue this if you want to but not about Madara, Shikamaru, or Shikaku, they plan too slowly.

you're right i think madara is smart as in he has vast knowledge of the ninja world where as Minato and Itachi can come up with great ways to defeat their opponents very fast. But shikamaru and shikaku don't plan slowly they are also really smart but they just don't have the raw skills and power to bring their plans to fruition as easily as Itachi and Minato who are both some of the strongest ninja shown so far in the series.

No they plan pretty slowly, as seen when Shikamaru fought Temari, or Hidan for the first time, or Shikaku coming up with a strategy against the Zetsus.

Dude the reason they have to plan ahead is their lack of power and skills, Shikamaru had to plan ahead otherwise he would be dead, unlike itachi and minato he doesn't have great jutsus, and speed(minato), genjutsu(itachi). Shikamaru is one of the smartest guys in naruto but what does he have that can easily beat any character, the answer is not really anything he only has shadow style jutsus and has to come up with roundabout methods to beat them. Think about it how can he come up with a plan that allows him to beat hidan that quickly, there isn't really anything he can do to him with his powers that is why he has to plan ahead. when he fought temari he was a kid so he obviously won't hav the same lvl of skills as a tactician back then. Where as minato when he faced madara had power and speed but used his brains to figure out his powers and beat him right then and there, and itachi immediately figured out about chibaku tensei's weakspot and had the power to destroy it with help, see the point is shikamaru can also figure out things like this in the heat of the battle but for most of time does not have the ability to do anything about it where as Itachi and minato do.
