EDIT: This is a THEORY THREAD! There is a theory after Itachi's quote..

People live their lives bound by what they accept as correct and true. That's how they define "reality". But what does it mean to be "correct" or "true". Merely vague concepts...Their "reality" may all be an illusion. Can we consider them to be living in their world, shaped by their "beliefs"?

Possibly the best quote from the series, and it is something that resonates throughout the entire story. I believe that this quote is the cornerstone of Naruto and that the author was speaking to us through Itachi that, "things are not always what they seem."

We accepted a universe where people could harness the power inside of them, "chakra", and use it to do extraordinary things. We accepted that this was a power that resided inside of everyone from birth. But of course, this was merely a mirage because as we found out...this ability is nothing more than a stolen power from the Gods, or Nature (which one could argue, are one in the same.)

So Itachi was correct. Things aren't what they seemed, but now we have arrived at the origin of this illusion. But the truth still has yet to be revealed. We are still being fooled...

I will start with the fruit

The fruit is contradictory is it not? It grows once every millennium and can turn an ordinary person into a God. No one knows why they shouldn't touch it, but somehow knows what it is capable of, which of course, makes no sense. How could some one know if no ones ever touched it? Well there is a reason I assure you..

The Fruit, is not a fruit at all. But a living, breathing entity. It is the 2nd half of the "God Tree". If the God Tree wants no one to touch its power, why give them the opportunity at all? Is the Tree simply teasing humanity? Not at all. The tree, and by extension the Juubi, wants no one to touch what it's protecting humanity against...the Fruit however, doesn't agree.

We were led to believe a story where a Princess (some one with power and influence) sees the world and all of its faults, and decides that some one should become a "God" in order to bring peace. Something that parallels nicely with another we have seen...

So the Princess asks herself, "How should I go about bringing peace to the world? Oh...well let me eat that fruit everyone has been saying not to touch on the off chance that it gives me Godly powers." This is how it happened, no? No, its not. You see the tree was worshipped like a God.

And during a time of crisis what do religious pacifists do? They pray to their Gods. So the Princess embarked on a Mecca to the most Holy of places...the God Tree. While praying for the change she dreamed of something peculiar happened. A Fruit bore itself from the Tree and spoke to her. You see, the fruit only shows itself at the right time, the right opportunity to realize its influence over the world. Not every thousand years, but every time the right person reveals itself.

"In order to change this world, one must have the power to do so." it said to her. "Consume me and I will grant you the ability to shape the world however you please."

"But it is said that no one should ever touch you." she replied.

"We say it is forbidden only because we want humanity to show its independence. Humanity has fallen, and the omen of eating the fruit no longer will be enforced."

Enticed by this revelation, the Princess eats the fruit, cursing humanity and realizing the "Fruits" ambition.

Madara was being literal when he said people were cursed...

The Fruit = The Sharingan Tomoe.

The Tree is made up of two parts, which we see separated.

The Juubi, the God Tree. The Rinnengan, The Younger Son

This is why we see the Senju with abilities closely resembling the Juubi now.

And the Uchiha with a completely different set of abilities.

You must be registered for see images

In fact, one could make the argument that the Uchiha's mastery of illusions stems from the Fruits mastery of illusions. As I believe we will later see with its influence over the Princess.

Tobirama was being literal when he said the Uchiha were cursed...

The Senju draw their powers from the Juubi.
The Uchiha from the fruit.

Notice the attacking Juubi is depicted without the Tomoe?

You must be registered for see images

This is because the fruit had been taken...

Many of you will say, "Oh, but the Juubi was depicted with Tomoe when he was fighting the Sage. Why did he have tomoe when he didn't have the fruit?"

You must be registered for see images

And yes, this is true. WHEN HE WAS FIGHTING THE SAGE. Ever wonder what happened to the mother after the Sage was born? Strange how it never mentions her fate. Well I have an idea... she was attacked, and beaten by the Juubi (of course she may have conceded willingly, but we will see.) So the Juubi took back what was rightfully his, the fruit, and thus was granted the Tomoe again, but you see, the fruit had already won. By living on through the Sage. Not to mention, the Sage simply takes the Juubi's power back.

The force behind the fruit and its consumption is the same force behind the tablet.

The tablet is specifically written in order to lead the world into the current predicament we see it in now..

  • Unlocking the MS- Killing a person close to you
  • Unlocking the EMS- Killing your brother
  • Unlocking the Rinnengan- Stealing the Senju's DNA

These are all aspects of corruption! Specifically designed to make one (an Uchiha specifically) believe that humanity is lost and that infinite Tsukuyomi is the only way. It even tells you how to go about doing it. And the reason it was written on the tablet? Because the Uchiha are the ones influenced by the fruit

Not to mention. The fruits influence...is why this happens
You must be registered for see images

Notice the one "key" piece of information left off of the tablet?

You must be registered for see images

That's right. Why the fruit appears and why some one shouldn't eat it. Because it of course, is a corrupting influence and the reason behind all of the troubles we see.

How did Madara even know of the Infinite Tsukuyomi? How did he know the eyes of the tree would reflect off the moon? Why didn't he know why people shouldn't touch the tree's power?

The Fruit, the Fruit, the Fruit.

The Juubi is simply the protector of this great and corrupting evil. Hence why it went on a rampage to get it back.
So, then why? What is the endgame? Well...its here

ENDGAME

You must be registered for see images

The Infinite Tsukuyomi. It is the reason the Princess ate the fruit. The reason the tablet was written the way it was. And what half of this God known as the "God Tree" wants. That isn't Obito's eye, it isn't Madara's, it is the Tree's eye, the Tree will have complete control, or more specifically, the corrupting God that resides in the tree, the one the Juubi was protecting the world against, will have complete control. That is why Madara said, "we must give in to the power of the God Tree." He knew he wasn't the one that would control the Infinite Tsukuyomi. He is being influenced by another (without realizing).

Some Quick Side Notes and Tangent Theories

Note 1:
This theory can work without the influence writing the tablet. I know some of you may think the tablet is contradictory to Infinite Tsukuyomi, but the theory works without that piece. Assuming the Sage wrote the tablet, he would not have known the true reasons behind his mother eating the fruit, being influenced to do so by an evil entity. Whoever wrote the tablet, I think it is still clear the Fruit had some influence over them.

Note 2: Tangent Theory

While I don't believe the Fruit is an actual Fruit the way you and me see a fruit, it doesn't necessarily have to be the influence behind Kaguya eating the fruit. The point of this thread is to highlight why the Mother ate the fruit. She was told to by some one or something that would know what would happen. Perhaps a God-like figure, creature, or other human who had the knowledge. Perhaps some one who had eaten the fruit themselves a thousand years prior. Is it possible that Infinite Tsukuyomi dates back further than we know? Is the person who originally consumed the fruit the one manipulating everything? Basically, everywhere I said the fruit was influencing the Princess and by extension humanity, insert a man (or woman) who ate the fruit 1000 years prior to Kaguya.

This is a very interesting explanation, I've only read part of it so far, but it sounds good!

Edit: Just finished and that was well worth the time to read!

AHH LOL! You guys are driving me crazy. The theory after the quote is what's important!

Theory was spot on. BTW, I wasn't joking about that quote. Itachi and Pain words= mind rape for a college professor if you use it the right way. I got into grad school using that quote.

Interesting theory...

Plot Holes:

-Why would the primary goal of the 'fruit' be infinite tsukuyomi when the moon supposedly never existed before? How would it know it's own eye would be cast on something that never existed?

-If the juubi got it's tomoeo back by repossessing the corrupt 'fruit' from kaguya, why did it still go after rikudo? Why did rikudo not have tomoe in his rinnegan for that matter, especially when he became jin? He should have been influenced also.

-why does the younger son's eye look like a messed up rinnegan instead of a sharingan?

-And the most important question. What is... my real name. XD

Bit of advice. Twist the words up a little and don't use the entire quote. I used that for a paper on Emerson's Nature and got a A on it and a letter of recommendation into grad school... by the professor over admissions.

To your first point about the moon. I think the story told may be a fabrication of how it really happened, but we will see. Whether there was a moon or not is not really the point, the point of everything was control. If there was no moon there would have been some other way. The most important thing is to realize that some one manipulated the situation.

To the point about the Juubi going after Rikudo. I don't think it did, in fact, in seems like its the other way around...Rikudo went after the Juubi. Maybe for revenge, maybe he thought he could still save his mother, or perhaps he thought the Juubi was too dangerous to leave roaming free.

To the point about the Son's eye. That seems like a artist rendition of some type of eyes. If we ever see the real thing I don't think they'll look like that...but I cant be sure.

Rant mode on.

Oh god, that quote. It feels like it MIGHT well sound profound in the original language, but honestly it's just retelling the whole "underneath the underneath" with a slightly more open phrasing and even MORE ham-handed execution. I just don't see how it could ever be construed as "profound".

Profound is taking an overlooked aspect of life and defining it in a new way. Profound is taking an entirely new idea and fitting it in SO PERFECTLY with what we know of the world that it's just impossible to deny. Profound is introducing something that elicts a "huh. I NEVER thought of that. Let me just work through that, for a minute or ten."

Profound is NOT taking a COMPLETELY OBVIOUS idea introduced YEARS ago and phrasing it like a COMPLETELY wasted philosophy-student, and a pretty dim one at that.

I mean, "People's values may not be as absolute as we thought they were" is about as simple an idea as you can get. Please, explain how Itachi is in any way stating ANYTHING new or intelligent, even in a framework as simple as the Narutoverse.

Rant mode, off.

Theory is interesting though. Not sure I agree: The feeling I got was that the Shinjuu is a separate entity from the fruit entirely. The fruit is valuable to it, but not a necessary component OF it. The tree creates one every thousand years, apparently for the sole purpose of inviting people eat of it so it can go Juubi on them and wreak havoc. That seems unnecessarily convoluted, cruel, and meaningless, even for a world as messed up as the NV.

But what IS a fruit? A delicious snack. Well, that's the human point of view.

So the humans took the fruit and awoke POWER they shouldn't have had. The shitty situation in the Shinobi World is a result of power men didn't ask for and had no right to, but equally due to the Shinjuu's decision of going to war against mankind due to the insult (and possibly MURDER, but I'll get back to that).

So yes, the fruit's consumption has led to mankind's "corruption". But it's equally likely that the "Curse of Hatred" is the work of the Juubi, and, indeed, it makes a fair bit more sense in at least one way: If the Curse is the result of the Fruit, then Sasuke's vendetta isn't against the Bijuu, it's against MANKIND ITSELF.

Which would actually be a HILARIOUS opportunity to make him a villain again, but I digress.

What is a fruit? A container, and a delicious one. But what is contained within?

SEEDS. Or, given the nature of the Shinjuu (one fruit per millenium and all that), A seed.

Basically, a child, encased in godlike power so it could one day become the equal of its parent.

And humanity killed and ate it, and used the power inside to tear its grieving parent to pieces, and then to tear into each other, starting meaningless, endless wars.

And now, the situation is finally resolving itself.

A good theory and an excellent read. It kept my attention throughout.

One question comes to mind. Why would the So6P not complete the process of Mugen Tsukuyomi? If the corrupting influence extends to him then why not complete the plan, or are you implying that he did?

Thank you for the kind words.

Your question is certainly a reasonable one. If the "entity" (is what I will call it for now) had influence over the Sage why not just make him do it? (which his what youre asking if I'm understanding correctly) There are a few ways I could go about answering..

1. Yes, the corruption succeeded in influencing the Sage, and the cycle we see now is due to the initial activation of the Infinite Genjutsu.

2. The Sage realized what was happening and proceeded to split the power up (moon, Juubi, two sons) so that by the time the Juubi was pieced back together some one would figure out what was going on (which is why he would leave the tablet)

3. Due to the balance of the Sages power (Juubi and Fruit) the fruit could not gain the influence it needed. Only when the Elder Son is born (created?) is it able to proceed.

4. Same scenario as two, the entity is defeated by the Sage, the power is split up. And like Voldemort (not a huge Harry Potter Fan but I feel like its a good example) the corrupting influence bides it time till it regains its strength, manipulating certain people through circumstantial events until Tsukuyomi is achieved. Much like Tobi said to the Kages "this is a plan for me to become whole again." This could have been directly said by the actual mastermind through Tobi or it could simply parallel the final antagonists actions.

These are the quotes a person starts to make once he has done the worst deed of all.

However, your looking at it from the opposite point of view of the main character and someone like Hashirama.

What about Orochimaru?

What about Gato?

The focus comes back again to the Circle of Hatred.

But a awesome read tho.

Also, Mokuton isn't a Senju ability.. thats like Saying Rinnegan is a Uchiha ability since its an eye.
