EDIT: This is a THEORY THREAD! There is a theory after Itachi's quote..
Possibly the best quote from the series, and it is something that resonates throughout the entire story. I believe that this quote is the cornerstone of Naruto and that the author was speaking to us through Itachi that, "things are not always what they seem."
We accepted a universe where people could harness the power inside of them, "chakra", and use it to do extraordinary things. We accepted that this was a power that resided inside of everyone from birth. But of course, this was merely a mirage because as we found out...this ability is nothing more than a stolen power from the Gods, or Nature (which one could argue, are one in the same.)
People live their lives bound by what they accept as correct and true. That's how they define "reality". But what does it mean to be "correct" or "true". Merely vague concepts...Their "reality" may all be an illusion. Can we consider them to be living in their world, shaped by their "beliefs"?

So Itachi was correct. Things aren't what they seemed, but now we have arrived at the origin of this illusion. But the truth still has yet to be revealed. We are still being fooled...
I will start with the fruit
The fruit is contradictory is it not? It grows once every millennium and can turn an ordinary person into a God. No one knows why they shouldn't touch it, but somehow knows what it is capable of, which of course, makes no sense. How could some one know if no ones ever touched it? Well there is a reason I assure you..
The Fruit, is not a fruit at all. But a living, breathing entity. It is the 2nd half of the "God Tree". If the God Tree wants no one to touch its power, why give them the opportunity at all? Is the Tree simply teasing humanity? Not at all. The tree, and by extension the Juubi, wants no one to touch what it's protecting humanity against...the Fruit however, doesn't agree.
We were led to believe a story where a Princess (some one with power and influence) sees the world and all of its faults, and decides that some one should become a "God" in order to bring peace. Something that parallels nicely with another we have seen...
So the Princess asks herself, "How should I go about bringing peace to the world? Oh...well let me eat that fruit everyone has been saying not to touch on the off chance that it gives me Godly powers." This is how it happened, no? No, its not. You see the tree was worshipped like a God.
And during a time of crisis what do religious pacifists do? They pray to their Gods. So the Princess embarked on a Mecca to the most Holy of places...the God Tree. While praying for the change she dreamed of something peculiar happened. A Fruit bore itself from the Tree and spoke to her. You see, the fruit only shows itself at the right time, the right opportunity to realize its influence over the world. Not every thousand years, but every time the right person reveals itself.
"In order to change this world, one must have the power to do so." it said to her. "Consume me and I will grant you the ability to shape the world however you please."
"But it is said that no one should ever touch you." she replied.
"We say it is forbidden only because we want humanity to show its independence. Humanity has fallen, and the omen of eating the fruit no longer will be enforced."
Enticed by this revelation, the Princess eats the fruit, cursing humanity and realizing the "Fruits" ambition.
Madara was being literal when he said people were cursed...

The Fruit = The Sharingan Tomoe.
The Tree is made up of two parts, which we see separated.
Juubi
Tree
Rinnengan
Younger Son
Fruit
Sharingan
Elder Son
In fact, one could make the argument that the Uchiha's mastery of illusions stems from the Fruits mastery of illusions. As I believe we will later see with its influence over the Princess.
Tobirama was being literal when he said the Uchiha were cursed...
The Senju draw their powers from the Juubi.
The Uchiha from the fruit.
Notice the attacking Juubi is depicted without the Tomoe?
This is because the fruit had been taken...
Many of you will say, "Oh, but the Juubi was depicted with Tomoe when he was fighting the Sage. Why did he have tomoe when he didn't have the fruit?"
The force behind the fruit and its consumption is the same force behind the tablet.
The tablet is specifically written in order to lead the world into the current predicament we see it in now..
Not to mention. The fruits influence...is why this happens
Notice the one "key" piece of information left off of the tablet?
That's right. Why the fruit appears and why some one shouldn't eat it. Because it of course, is a corrupting influence and the reason behind all of the troubles we see.
The Juubi is simply the protector of this great and corrupting evil. Hence why it went on a rampage to get it back.
So, then why? What is the endgame? Well...its here
ENDGAME
The Infinite Tsukuyomi. It is the reason the Princess ate the fruit. The reason the tablet was written the way it was. And what half of this God known as the "God Tree" wants. That isn't Obito's eye, it isn't Madara's, it is the Tree's eye, the Tree will have complete control, or more specifically, the corrupting God that resides in the tree, the one the Juubi was protecting the world against, will have complete control. That is why Madara said, "we must give in to the power of the God Tree." He knew he wasn't the one that would control the Infinite Tsukuyomi. He is being influenced by another (without realizing).

This is why we see the Senju with abilities closely resembling the Juubi now.

And the Uchiha with a completely different set of abilities.

And yes, this is true. WHEN HE WAS FIGHTING THE SAGE. Ever wonder what happened to the mother after the Sage was born? Strange how it never mentions her fate. Well I have an idea... she was attacked, and beaten by the Juubi (of course she may have conceded willingly, but we will see.) So the Juubi took back what was rightfully his, the fruit, and thus was granted the Tomoe again, but you see, the fruit had already won. By living on through the Sage. Not to mention, the Sage simply takes the Juubi's power back.

- Unlocking the MS- Killing a person close to you
- Unlocking the EMS- Killing your brother
- Unlocking the Rinnengan- Stealing the Senju's DNA
These are all aspects of corruption! Specifically designed to make one (an Uchiha specifically) believe that humanity is lost and that infinite Tsukuyomi is the only way. It even tells you how to go about doing it. And the reason it was written on the tablet? Because the Uchiha are the ones influenced by the fruit

How did Madara even know of the Infinite Tsukuyomi? How did he know the eyes of the tree would reflect off the moon? Why didn't he know why people shouldn't touch the tree's power?
The Fruit, the Fruit, the Fruit.
The Fruit, the Fruit, the Fruit.

Some Quick Side Notes and Tangent Theories
Note 1:
This theory can work without the influence writing the tablet. I know some of you may think the tablet is contradictory to Infinite Tsukuyomi, but the theory works without that piece. Assuming the Sage wrote the tablet, he would not have known the true reasons behind his mother eating the fruit, being influenced to do so by an evil entity. Whoever wrote the tablet, I think it is still clear the Fruit had some influence over them.
Note 2: Tangent Theory
While I don't believe the Fruit is an actual Fruit the way you and me see a fruit, it doesn't necessarily have to be the influence behind Kaguya eating the fruit. The point of this thread is to highlight why the Mother ate the fruit. She was told to by some one or something that would know what would happen. Perhaps a God-like figure, creature, or other human who had the knowledge. Perhaps some one who had eaten the fruit themselves a thousand years prior. Is it possible that Infinite Tsukuyomi dates back further than we know? Is the person who originally consumed the fruit the one manipulating everything? Basically, everywhere I said the fruit was influencing the Princess and by extension humanity, insert a man (or woman) who ate the fruit 1000 years prior to Kaguya.
