Actually I feel this as an exaggeration of jiraiya's abilities.He is strong,no doubt but even with intel and sufficient prep time,Jiraiya can't take on all the six at once.He has no counter to deva path's abilities.

Same goes for naruto as well.He didn't fight the deva path until half of the pains were taken out and pein needed naruto alive.If he had the intent to kill,pein could've killed naruto easily U_U

Yeh naruto had toads left right and centre aswell as genjustu from ma and pa, hinata, the village wore pain down, aswell as not being able to use his gravity thing until later when half the paths were destroyed, there were many factors but naruto was just enough to finish pain an stop him

the secret was there were 6 pains.. not 3.
if all 6 pain were in the genjutsu they would lost.
naruto doesn't have a genjutsu so even if naruto got a better sage mode thn. jiraya he can't defeat pain is not really surprising.

**Remember jiraya lose his arm,(his power is not cut to half) With one arm it's drasticlly reduce his power cuz he can't perform most of his jutsu. so pain was talking about the genjustu that put 3 of 6 pains down.
