While we all **** around trying to fit the Part 1 battle into our post-Part 2 understanding of the Manga, consider the obvious fact that Part 1 feats aren't all that relevant, precisely because Kishi hadn't worked out the exact details or power-scaling yet. He had no idea that he'd later make his Bijuu able to fire Bijuudama, or exactly how physically strong they would be. The most we were given was that the Kyuubi's tails could create things like hurricanes, or level mountains... but those are actually both very vague, meant to merely to hype the Kyuubi's power.
In the end, Part 1 Naruto did nothing more than land a punch to wake Gaara up, which ended the Bijuu possession... and that's honestly not how Bijuu possession works in Part 2, either.
