This thread by no means accepts the preposition made in the title. Nor is it an ultimatum for all to follow. It is only a collection of my own thoughts, and reflections. I could well be wrong, or correct. You decide what you want to believe. In this thread, though i have an opinion , i want to think of this topic logically , so rather than repeating a belief or telling you what to think, i want to show you HOW i think.

We all feel pain.

However, what is the 'pain' we feel?

So , the scientific explanation - one no-one can deny- is that our impulses are taken from the sensory neurons to motor neurons , and these are electrical impulses. You have sympathetic nervous systems, para sympathetic, autonomic, etc

However, these impulses are HOW pain is transmitted.

What is PAIN itself.

I will get the same reply : electrical impulses , TRAVELING etc,, chemical reactions.

These all , fair to say, accurately describe how pain is transmitted, and created. However, this does not describe you, in your conscious 'feeling the agony'.

Could atoms...ever possess this ? Or is there something else, in us.

Pain is essentially a signal. It tells us that something is wrong/damaged in the body or tells us to respond to an external or internal stimulus. It pretty much says to stop what we're doing and do something else. Really useful evolutionary tool for helping populations/species increase their chances of survival.

pain is a special signal interperted by our brain as "pain". that signal by itself is meaningless without a brain that knows that signal means pain.

maybe i can use computers to help you understand, in computers we use bits to represent numbers. every bit can be 0 (no electrictiy) or 1 (some electricity). a 4 bit number can have 16 values, from 0 to 15, like so:

0000 - 0
0001 - 1
0010 - 2
0011 - 3
0100 - 4
0101 - 5
0110 - 6
0111 - 7
1000 - 8
1001 - 9
1010 - 10
1011 - 11
1100 - 12
1101 - 13
1110 - 14
1111 - 15

but how does a computer represent negative numbers? it uses the last bit as a "sign bit", sign being the symbol + or -. a 0 (no electricity) means plus and a 1 (some electrictiy) means minus. using the last table but with the new meaning:

0000 - 0
0001 - -0
0010 - 1
0011 - -1
0100 - 2
0101 - -2
0110 - 3
0111 - -3
1000 - 4
1001 - -4
1010 - 5
1011 - -5
1100 - 6
1101 - -6
1110 - 7
1111 - -7

the bits are exactly the same as those in the previous table, but the meaning of each clump of 4 bits has changed. every modern computer can use both types of meanings, called signed, and unsigned numbers. in the physical electrical way they are stored in memory there is no difference between 0101 for 5 and 0101 for -2. it's the brain of the computer that changes the meaning.
