Well, this is more a hypothesis than a theory, due to me wanted to listen to your opinions and collect more information that i may not know about.
We all know that Orochimaru wanted to aquire immortality and all jutsus, but the way for him to do that never became much clear. Well, what if since Naruto classic era, Orochimaru knew about Kaguya, or the Otsutsuki clan at least, and wanted to aquire the six paths power to himself becaming the Juubi jinchuuriki, much like Madara and Obito did in the Great War?
The reasons why i think that goes as follow:
1. Orochimaru became part of Akatsuki: We know that Orochimaru entered Akatsuki after the attempt to steal Pain´s Rinnegan, and he was there to try steal Itachi sharingan. But what if he was there primarily to learn about how to absorb the powers of the Bijuus, and to study Zetsu? The way i see that is that he learned that Rinnegan was required to became the Juubi jinchuuriki, but when that failed, he tried to steal Itachi´s sharingan not because of it copy ability, but because he knew that the natural evolution of the sharingan was the rinnegan, and it was a way to aquire it without having to battle Pain, and at the same time, learn about the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path and study zetsu, because he knew that he was linked to the Otsutsuki in some way, or even knew everything about him.
2. Orochimaru wanted Kimimaru as his new body: We know that Orochimaru wanted to use Kimimaru as his new vessel, but what if he did not wanted him because of his kekkei genkai as we assumed, but because he knew that the Kaguya clan were the Otsutsuki descendants? Maybe after learn about the Demonic statue and fail to obtain both Rinnegan and Sharingan, he learned about the Kaguya clan someway through Zetsu and thought that beeing in the body of a Otsutsuki was enough to became Juubi jinchuuriki.
3. The Konohagakure attack: We assumed that his main goal to attack konoha was to kill hiruzen, but that would contradict with his calculist personality. I think that he was in konoha to learn more about sharingan, and how to evolve it to rinnegan, and to learn more about the Shiki Fujin jutsu. I mean, he already knew about the Edo tensei jutsu, and how to fully control the reanimated body. Maybe he wanted to use a combination of Shiki Fujin and Edo tensei as a meaning to alternativelly steal the Bijuus, without the Demonic Statue, and the only way to learn more about Shiki Fujin was to start a battle against Hiruzen. Of course, he also set his new vessel with Sasuke, after Kimimaru plan had failed due to his illness.
4. The Great War: After he was brought back by Sasuke, it was strange that he helped everyone in the war. It was almost like he "turned good", but i think that he was only fighting against the man who mannaged to do what he wanted to do (Obito, and then Madara), as if he was learning how they mannaged to became the Juubi jinchuuriki, and how he could do it after, and i mean after a long time, because if he turned in the Juubi jinchuuriki in that moment, every ninja of every nation would try to stop him, and it was not how he wanted to do it. I think that in the war, he collected more information to design a new way to became a god.
Evidences that support the hypothesys:
1. His experiments: Shin Uchiha was a weard experiment. Why Orochimaru was trying to set a body that could receive sharingan all around the body? It was sure not to help Danzo, but maybe he was trying ways to evolve the sharingan to rinnegan without him personally doing it, and then steal with from someone that he could beat.
2. In Boruto we see that he trade Mitsuki "citizenship" for information about Kaguya and the Otsutsuki clan. Why and how he would have so much information that no one more would know, if not for his attempt to became the juubi jinchuuriki?
3. Orochimaru had a god complex, as very well put by Hiruzen. What better way to fulfill his complex than becaming the new six path sage?
Finally, i would much like to know your thoughts about if you think that this was his main goal, because to me it explains much of his behave and actions. I apologize for anything wrong with the way i wrote, as english is not my main language.
