He joined Akatsuki to get close to Itachi because he wanted to take over his body. Itachi proved to be stronger than himself, so he had no reason to stay. He decided to leave and target the easier alternative - Sasuke.

I'm not to sure about that. Oro join Akatsuki before Itachi did, so Oro had to join for a different reason.

I don't know about scared I just think he rationalized the fact that obtaining Itachi's eyes is damn near impossible for him to do, so he just gave up on him and looked toward getting Sasuke's eyes because Sasuke was alot weaker.

Well even if Orochimaru joined before Itachi did, his primary objective was to obtain the Sharingan.

When Itachi proved to be out of his reach he left to target Sasuke. Nothing more.

Oro isnt way weaker than itachi like most of u are saying, he just fell for his genjutsu for the first time, he just needs to be more aware, saying that oro <itachi means itachi> jiraya with way easy difficulty.
