I think it's pretty clear what Orochimaru truly was seeking and that was So6P power. Think about it, he knew all about the Rinnegan and Senju and Uchiha DNA mixing. His earlier vessel was Kimmimaro who we learn was a clan relative to Kaguya then when his body failed he went after an Uchiha which would also lead him to the Sage's power. Everything Oro did was to reach the sage.

I think he wanted Kaguya's power. He knew about Uzumaki, Kaguya clan, Senju and Uchiha. He knew about Mokuton (regeneration and Bijuu tamer). He knew about chakra chains (Bijuu tamer). He knew about sharingan (Bijuu tamer). So he probably also had an idea about the Juubi since he was a part of Akastuki.. He just didn't know about the Ashura and Indra requirements, but knowing him he would have ended up finding out since he only sought the special clan members.
