The manga is far better than the anime IMO, but the anime is also a lot of fun. I suggest you start with the anime just to get a good feel of the series and then you move on to the manga.

I usually watch Anime first, then when I caught up, I read manga chapters .

Watch the anime till the Marineford Arc then go with the manga for the rest

I read the manga and that's what I am gonna suggest to you too. You can selectively watch some episodes of the anime after reading the manga. Other than that, the animation isn't that great so yeah, manga it is.
