He pretty much did, or it was implied he could. Sonic couldn't do jack to hurt Genos, while the latter cut off Sonic's hood, and afterwards Saitama broke the fight. Eventually Sonic himself would've been hurt or beheaded.

Actually after Genos cut off some of Sonics hair, Sonic then got serious and try to use his special move. Genos couldn't read Sonics movements so he decided to blow up everything within the area, and to do that he had to reach maximum power which led him to pass out/malfunction.
And that sir shows Genos can't keep up with Sonic.
