Anyone else pick up on how Luffy's feet don't touch the ground once, after he activates Gear 4? It also appears as if there are "blasts" under his feet the whole time, suggesting he is contanstly pushing himself in mid air. His new form is pretty nice imo, seems like an armament version of Sengoku's budda fruit, while on a smaller scale. Nice chapter.
Man, you gotta give it to Luffy, he's always been a combat genius but Gear 4th really takes the cake here.
Koka hardens one's body. With the interaction of two Busoshoku Haki users (black coated armor on each), it's clear the stronger Haki user will win the clash.
However, Doflamingo using Athlete's Thread on Luffy tells us one thing: Luffy's overcome the "weakness" of B. Haki. Think about it. Coating oneself in Haki grants incredible defense but can be broken with sufficient force and higher level attacks. Smoker was still cut up even when coating himself with Haki.
With Gear 4th, Luffy retains the flexibility of his Fruit while securing the defensive capability of Koka. So blunt and even cutting forces have a much, much harder time hurting him. Blunt forces simply "push" Luffy's body without breaking it, and cutting forces can deal with the flexibility but have a layer of Haki to go through.
Great chapter, incredibly liberating to see Doffy finally get a good smackdown after all this time. 5/5.

If you can't see it, there's no point in me explaining it. Lol it's simple.
Okay...? I didn't mean his way of moving, I simply pointed out his feet didn't touch the ground at all once he entered gear fourth, more of a comical note...for some.
Whats with the blackness around his eyes and the fire (black) patterns? Monkey D Luffy is a fitting name for his appearance now hehe
It looks a bit stupid but it's badass as well
5/5
Can't decide which one it reminds me more of. Probably SSJ4.
But why exactly do those marking comes around his eyes? Do they sink into their sockets? Protecting his eyes with haki lol?
And I really like the detail of Haki tattoos. Clever way of giving the design some 'just because' cool factors without being ridiculous. But now the question is, is that CoA covering his neck/back portion, or CoC energy?
Well, Luffy said he developed Gear 4 to fight wild animals. It's not uncommon to find wild animals that have adapted to targeting the eyes of predators above them, such as spitting venom in the eyes of another animal. Luffy could be using Koka around his eyes as a defense to this. Hopefully we get a training flashback sometime.
You can see tufts of smoke where the elbow-like points are. His arm is releasing some kind of pressure or miniature sonicboom to propel his arm in another direction.
Ok before i start talking about gear 4, let’s get some quick thoughts about this chapter out of the way first:
The panic of the people getting away from the birdcage was alright. You can tell that the tension was getting even more severe by the minute.
The scene with Baby 5 calling Sai darling was cute. LOL
Not much to say about the small conversation between Cabbage and Law other than it was a nice foreshadowing of what’s to come once Doflamingo is defeated.
I’m willing to bet that the kick that Doflamingo used against Luffy is the same one that he used to cut the four corners of the palace with a while back.
Now with all that said, let’s talk about Luffy’s new gear form!

Right off the bat, it looks like a silly Nightmare Luffy rehash, but a very cool one, and it fits Luffy perfectly since he’s a silly kinda guy which makes this gear form so….Luffy! Hell, I think this should be nicknamed “Gorilla D. Luffy”! XD
This is why i’m glad that i didn’t partake in any major discussions about gear 4 since the one thing that I’ve learned from the Super Saiyan God fiasco was to not have any expectations (or at the very least, any high expectations) for any new battle forms that the main character will get in the near future.
Now about it’s abilities. As some people expected, it’s almost like a balanced state between Gear 2 (Speed-wise) and Gear 3 (Strength-wise). I really like how the arms and legs act like pistons and springs of sorts, kinda similar to Bellemy’s Bane Bane no mi.

Am I the only here who thinks that these two panels makes it look like Luffy is about to shot out of a mega buster from the Mega man series!? XD
Anyway, What i also really love about this form the most is how it incorporates aspects/principles of other Rokushiki techniques besides just Soru, such as using

as well as using aspects of geppo

I even liked the way that his body

in a way.
You know, I find it impressive that two of the strawhats (Sanji and Luffy respectively) are still adapting Rokushiki into their combat repertoire in one way or another. I just wish that a certain other strawhat had adapted a Rokushiki technique (maybe Shigan perhaps) into their combat abilities to become just as impressive.
*turns his head towards a certain archeologist and stares at her in disappointment*
Anyway, that’s all i want to say about Gear 4 and this chapter as a whole! I loved it and I can’t wait for the next chapter!

I think Oda was inspired by Fujin the god of wind for this design.
* Traditional pose
* Look how oda cleverly looped around the smoke over Luffy's arms and behind his back to represent the "wind bag"
* Wild hair
* Demon stare, eyes deep in socket

Besides we already had Enel as the lightning god

Love tributes and references like this in One Piece
In the Gear 4th scan, I think Luffy's scar is a different shade of white than the rest of his skin. I might just be imagining it, but it kind of looks a bit darker to me. If so, it's a nice touch of attention to detail by Oda; making the scar a bit darker than his skin because it'd be like that in color.
I think the elasticity (and balloon like feature) of Gear 4 has helped luffy master the geppo even better. And it's his muscles that are contracting and expanding in such fury that allows even his hands to pull off a geppo.
What are the odds of making an execution plan by World Government for Garp to lure out both Dragon and Luffy? There are some rotten higher-ups among the Marines.
