every main Uchiha has suffered mental breakdown to some degree.

Madara lost his brother, turned into a vengeful and ruthless killer to achieve his goal.
Sasuke, lost his family, turned from a happy kid, to a cold loner, which eventally lead him to betray the village, then lost itachi and had nothing but hate in his heart.
Obito lost the one person he loved, and she was killed right as he was about to save her, that drove him to do what he has done.
Itachi a kind, gentle and cheerful person, seeing war and losing comrades, he became a pacifist, then when he had to kill his family, his emotions died only to come back upon his death.

Tobirama already explained why the uchiha are sooo stuck on revenge.

Everyone experiences and deals with loss differently. Just amplify that feeling by 20 if u are uchiha

Rin dieing was just the spark that Madara needed to get inside Obit's head and twist his thoughts...
Rin was just an example to Obito of just how cruel the world can be. So technically it was the start of the process of why Obito's hatred grew.
But that single even was merely just the little seed that grew into something much bigger, because of Madara.

He didn't start the war over Rin, he even said it directly at one point. Look at it this way the events surrounding Rins death were the catalyst which is why her image represents the issue. But Rin isn't that actual issue it was that Obito gave up on the real world.

After his accident he clung to his ideal of what the world was like - a happy ideal. But when he finally made it out of the cave the real world wasn't anything like he remembered, in fact it had turned into some weird twisted place where his friends kill each other. Thats why he rejects the real world, because he prefers his image of it, which will in turn be the image he sees in infinite Tsukiyomi. He turned his back on the real world, severed all connections and became isolated.

The events surrounding Rins death were the catalyst, which is why her image is representative of Obito turning his back on the world. Obito explained all of this himself, but people still don't understand it for whatever reason.
