Obito is not a realistic character, but he's realistic in the Naruto universe, Uchiha's go insane after traumatic events it's called the Curse of the Uchiha as described by Tobirama. This is the main reason behind their problematic existence. Also, Obito said the war wasn't about Rin, the death of Rin just made him realize that the world was Hell and he wanted to change that. When Naruto finally shatters his delusional mentality he recalls Rin because that is what set him off, but she wasn't the reason behind the war, she's just a symbol. Obito was very pure, too much for his own good, he was so dedicated to protecting his friends that when he ultimately found he couldn't, he refused to accept the world that took Rin from him. Not because his relationship with Rin was just THE DEEP, but because he simply couldn't accept it, it was his uniquely pure personality mixed with the Curse of the Uchiha that created the hate filled Obito we knew, and it makes perfect sense if you think about it in the context we are given.
I do agree that I would have liked his hard life to be expanded on, and perhaps have other shitty things happen so that when Rin eventually died in front of him it would be like "the last straw" like with Gaara, where he suffered so much and was ultimately betrayed and shown the worst of the world his entire life, he had no reason to love anything.
But you see that's unnecessary with Obito or even Nagato, their inability to control their feelings derives from their eyes. Madara went crazy because of it, Obito did, Nagato did, Sasuke eventually did, but Itachi didn't because Itachi is just too cool for that. That just goes to show how powerful Itachi's resolve was, his wisdom and self reflection allowed him to not fall victim to the Curse of the Uchiha.
But regardless of Itachi setting the bar very high for his colorful eye'd brethren, the story makes a point to explain why these characters lose it, because it's not about them being like real people they are cursed people, and that's what makes them a good villain for this story, because the represent the very essence of what Naruto stands for, not accepting the shit even when everything is screaming at you to just accept it and move on, like with Naruto and Sasuke. To preserver and hold onto hope, the hope that the world tells you doesn't exist, Naruto was desperate to hold onto it at all costs. Obito decided that it was futile to believe hope could be found in the world, and for the type of character he was that makes perfect sense, and thus he decided to use the Infinite Tsukyomi to create it instead, to create an ideal world opposite from the one he found to be Hell, one where there is pain, hate, and conflict. "A world of winners, a world of peace, a world of love, we will make a world of just that." it makes sense from an Uchiha point of view, where their minds have been consumed by torment due to their very brain chemistry.
Madara was almost changed, he almost returned to the village and made Konoha a great place alongside Hashirama, but like Hashirama said he spiraled farther and farther into darkness, this is for the reasons Tobriama gave. Now perhaps Madara became self aware of this, and thus used the Uchiha child Obito to become his slave, why? Because not only was he Uchiha, but he was just so good hearted and loving that creating a monster out of him was easy, because he has the same curse. The more love they have the more it hurts and the more they become hopeless, writhing, tormented people.
So Obito isn't a bad character, he's just a pure character, one so pure and dedicated to the themes at the heart of the story that the smallest thing could set him off and make him even more demented than Madara himself, and Madara understood this and used it to his advantage. The fact Naruto was able to save Sasuke before he fell further and became like Obito proved to Naruto that he was fit to be Hokage and save the world. Are there people that are just simply selfish and will always stand in the way of a stable community? Yes, and characters like Kakuzu, Orochimaru and his sound goons, Hidan, Deidara, etc did not share Naruto's goals and never would, they were taken down. (still don't know what the deal with Oro is though) But Nagato, Obito, Madara, these characters had a moral compass just like Naruto and thus made for a more unique story that wasn't black and white do-gooder vs do-badders, that's why I think you should appreciate what was done here. Obito's war was not about Rin, it was about fixing a broken world, and that's the same with Naruto. Naruto isn't the most complex character ever and neither is Obito, they both are pretty straight forward compared to other characters in the story, but that's because Obito is supposed to be the ultimate foil to Naruto's character, he wanted to be Hokage, he wanted to save the world, he wanted peace, he wanted to protect his friends etc, but he lost his way and succumbed to manipulation. After seeing Naruto's resolve and ability to accept things and move on, like Neji's death. After seeing how he preserved and didn't waver, and didn't give a **** what people told him because he knew to stick to his Ninja Way (same reason Hinata wanted to **** him) he began to appreciate his younger self, the one with a naive dream, and placed his faith in Naruto, who was the better man in the end, because he overcame hatred and believed in love.
