They were activated independently, however because both Obito and Kakashi were witnessing such a traumatic event at the same, it just so coincidentally happen to activate at the same time.

Most ppl believe both MSs would've activated simultaneously as long as one user was witnessing something necessary for it to happen.

When you look at it from a writer's standpoint, it really made for a cool scene, as opposed to just having one activate the other irrespective of the other user witnessing anything traumatic

inb4 Kakashi can see what Obito can see

I don't think we were given enough information to conclude either way, though I agree that it does make for a good scene if they activated independently. Both experiencing loss and trauma, but then going opposite directions from it.

That's my only doubt, though I think the roles are reversed with who sees what. Kakashi was the first to witness Rin's stabbing and did so with his non-Sharingan eye closed. Obito was immediately aware of what happened, grasping his empty eye socket but then brushing it off as his imagination.

It's a bit speculative as to whether Kakashi would've developed his MS if Obito had never witnessed it because a definite link was established between the eyes but then never fully explained.

Edit:
Responding to this thread has made me realise how little attention I paid to that scene so thank you for bringing it up. Obito seeing through Kakashi's eye may actually give partial credit to your idea rather than weakening it.

A key point is that Obito only received a brief glimpse through Kakashi's eye, it wasn't emphasised as a sustained link. It also occurred the moment Kakashi realised that he had pierced Rin. This suggests that Kakashi's sharingan was responding to his own distress, similar to how Uchiha's eyes behave in their native bodies.

My first time reading the chapter I thought it was because of how close Obito was to Kakashi that the link occurred. Now I'm wondering if it was because Kakashi's trauma caused his eye to change and, as the original host, Obito felt it. It could be a combination of both. Kakashi's eye changed, but for it to properly develop, Obito's own eye needed to change with it. Madara needed both rinnegan to achieve his full strength, showing a theme that eyes needed to be together to bring out their most.

I love how kakshi has a Sharingan eye that should no longer be sharingan as it isn't being supplied the chakra necessary from an uchiha brain to stay sharingan.

Literally impossible since Kakashi doesn't have the special chakra to awaken Sharingan.

According to Tobiramas theory on how Uchiha get MS it shud be impossible for Kakashi to attain it... But then again Kishi does what he wants.
