Chapter 12: Putting Plans To Action
The woman gave a look of surprise as she pushed back the pain, “Gabriel? Is he ok?” She cried out as panic took a hold of her. “Please, tell me my son isn’t dead!” She begged, grabbing a hold of the rag of a dress she was wearing.
“He’s fine, don’t worry.” Elizabeth said softly, easing the woman’s troubles. “However, according to what Gabriel said, everyone else has perished. I’m sorry for your lose.” Elizabeth said with a sympathetic tone, matching her facial features.
Anilla’s eyes widen at first and then her head dropped so she was now looking at her lap as if it were more interesting. “I knew this would happen, as did my husband. He told me what he did to Gabriel.” She said softly. She shook her head, “He was hoping that they wouldn’t find him, that he would be safe. No matter how tough he was on him, he always cared for him.”
Elizabeth smiled softly and then asked, “If your husband knew about the attack, why didn’t you guys flee?”
“Even if we had, we would have been found out. There was no escaping a fate that was already written for us.” She said softly. “Now my job is to serve you.” She said with a soft smile on her face.
“Don’t worry I will keep you safe.” Elizabeth promised. She stood up and turned to see a cot lying next to the bed. “We should get some sleep.”
“Of course my lady.” Anilla stood to her feet, but fell back into the chair due to a dizzy spell that was brought about through lack of proper nutrition.
Elizabeth helped her to the bed, “You should sleep on the bed, that cot isn’t going to help you with the condition you are in.”
Anilla nodded, “Of course thank you but where will you sleep?”
“The bed is big enough for the both of us, as long as you stick to your side. I’ll put a pillow in between us or something to divide the sides.” Elizabeth said as she grabbed a pillow with her good arm. Anilla smiled as she climbed into the side closets to the window and Elizabeth lay on the other side. She separated the two sides with a pillow, giving the other plenty of room in the king size bed. They both fell fast asleep, letting exhaustion take over.
~The Next Morning~
Elizabeth was torn from her sleep by a burning pain in her shoulder. She screamed out as she tried to fight off the cause of the discomfort, but found out she couldn’t move. Trevor was sitting on top of her, pinning her down as the prince was laughing at her cry of pain. She tried to be strong, but her shoulder felt like acid was eating away at her wounded shoulder. “What the hell did you do to me?” Elizabeth hollered as tears fell freely from her eyes.
“You should be thanking me sweetheart.” Oswald said with a cocky grin on his face. “I made your wound all better.”
“Like hell you did!” Elizabeth shouted angrily as she let her head fall back onto the pillow. She closed her eyes, trying to be as strong as she could, but the burning sensation was just too much for her.
“Enjoy the intense pain you will be going through. Maybe this small amount of torture will teach you your place bitch!” The prince smirked as he started for the door.
The second Trevor let Elizabeth’s hand go, she swiftly grabbed a throwing knife from under her pillow, that she hid there the night before, and threw it at the prince. However with the amount of pain she was in, her vision and other senses were going haywire, so instead of hitting him, the knife found its way to the glass bottle. The remains of the bottle scattered all over the floor as the liquid sat on top of the shard’s remains and soaked into the rug. Elizabeth glared at him as her breathing became more difficult. “Next time I won’t miss!” Elizabeth promised as another wave of searing pain hit her full force.
The prince’s face was pale from the sudden encounter. “Trevor I thought I told you to hold her down properly!” The prince sneered.
“My nose itched.” Trevor said, trying not to laugh at the commotion that he let happen.
The prince fumed at Trevor’s insolence, “How dare you take such a chance just so you could scratch your nose! If she hadn’t-“
“She’s in too much pain, she would have never hit you.” Trevor said seriously. “Gave you one hell of a scare though didn’t it?” Trevor laughed out, unable to contain his sick sense of humor any longer.
“How dare you! I should have you killed for such actions!”
Trevor’s eyes hardened, “What makes you think that I would let you escape this room alive if you did such a thing? You may be my employer but that won’t stop me from killing you if you threatened my life again. Be careful what you say, it could be the last.” Trevor said calmly as his tone matched the harshness that was seen in his eyes.
The prince shivered at Trevor’s words, knowing just how dangerous this man really was. None of his guards could kill him, which is why he hired him for such tasks, such as massacring Gabriel’s family. The Prince’s arrogance got the best of him though, “Yes but if you want your money then you will hold your tongue.”
Trevor smirked as his facial expression turned into a more sinister one, as he still held Elizabeth down. “I could rob you blind and you’d never know. Besides if you were dead who would stop me from waltzing right into your vault and taking what I wish. I think you underestimate my skills sir. Don’t let this go to your head either.” He glanced towards Elizabeth who was biting her lip, fighting back the pain. “I allowed you to use that medicine on her to heal her wound faster.” He glared hatefully at the prince, “I would never allow someone like you to cause my Elizabeth such pain without just cause.”
Elizabeth cringed as she tried to curl up into a ball. Trevor’s eyes sadden at the show of intense pain she was in. He let her go, knowing that she was in no condition to do anything more. She curled up into a ball, gripping her shoulder tightly, wishing the pain to stop. The prince could feel the anger boiling in his veins he wanted more than anything to slap Trevor, but he was also very aware that he would probably break his arm before his hand could ever make contact. “Her shoulder wound will be healed completely in a matter of hours.” He muttered through gritted teeth. “Once it does she will no longer be in anymore pain. Now get your things together, you have some business to take care of with that annoying little brother of yours.”
Trevor smiled, “Ah yes, my sweet little brother. What a great birthday gift to give him today,” He chimed happily as he climbed off the bed.
Elizabeth’s eyes widen, “Vincent.” She cried out softly as pain wracked her body.
“Don’t worry love, I’ll tell him you send him birthday wishes.” Trevor laughed as he walked for the door. The prince and Trevor exited the room together leaving Elizabeth to suffer through the torture.
Elizabeth cried harder as a mixture of pain and worry poured into the other, making her senses even more haywire than what they were a moment ago. A cool cloth was placed against her forehead. “It will only be a few more hours.” Anilla cooed softly to Elizabeth as she tried to bring down the fever that this pain had caused. Anilla felt heart broken as she tried her best to comfort Elizabeth, but knew no matter what she did, it just wouldn’t help.
Elizabeth let out a blood-curdling scream, “Vincent!” She screamed over and over into her voice gave out and her world finally succumbed to darkness.
Vincent awoke with a start, hearing Elizabeth scream out his name in his dream. He shook his head as the dream replayed in his mind. Trevor was holding her from behind and Vincent had stabbed her in the chest, on accident. Blood ran down her chin and dripped onto his sword, as her shirt was quickly painted red. “How could you Vincent?” He remembered her voice asking him as tears streamed down her cheeks. “I trusted you with my life and here you are taking it away from me. Why?” She pleaded as the tears ran faster now, as if someone had turned the faucet on for her tears. “I loved you, how could you betray me!” She cried out, “VINCENT!” She shouted out, voice full of pain.
He shook that dream out of his mind, “I’m so sorry Elizabeth.” He said softly, placing a hand to his face, trying to push back the guilt that haunted him even in his sleep now.
Everyone else was waking up as well and Michael turned to see Vincent, “We should get going.” He yawned.
Vincent nodded, “Of course.”
Michael stood up and stretched, “Vincent you will have to take Sophia with you.” He said as he folded his arms. “I have little time to get to the kingdom of Eden Fjord and if I am to get there quickly, I can’t bring her, she will only slow me down.”
Vincent sighed, he hadn’t thought about that. He only thought about how badly he didn’t want her around. “Fine, but Gabriel will be the one that has to protect her.”
Michael nodded, “Maybe they both could stay out of the way if he has to remain at her side.”
“Yes.” Vincent agreed as he stood to his feet. “Gabriel, Sophia, you both will be coming with me. Gabriel, protect her or just keep her out of the way, I don’t really care. Just both of you stay out of my way and we will all get along well enough.”
Michael chuckled, “Oh it’s November fifth isn’t it? Happy birthday Vincent.”
Vincent’s eye twitched, “Yes happy birthday to me, I get stuck babysitting.” He said sourly.
“Yes but it’s all for Elizabeth as well. One can’t forget their reasons as to why they do what they must.” Michael said wisely.
Vincent nodded, “Let’s move out.” He ordered, thinking about his dream and praying that she was safe.
“I’ll catch up with you guys as quickly as I can.” Michael said as he gathered his things together.
Vincent nodded; making sure Michael’s swords were secure at his waist. “Be careful Michael.” Vincent warned.
“Same to you guys, you may need it more than I will.” He sighed. Vincent turned his head as Gabriel and Sophia quickly gathered their things, not wanting to make Vincent wait.
Once the two parted ways, Vincent, Gabriel, and Sophia all headed towards the kingdom of Zaun, where they last left Elizabeth behind in her father’s mansion. “So where are we going?” Gabriel asked breaking the silence.
“To Elizabeth’s father’s house.” Vincent answered in a bored tone.
“That’s dumb wouldn’t they have a trap waiting for us?” Sophia muttered as she walked behind Vincent, but next to Gabriel.
“Of course, but there will be answers there.”
“Meaning your brother?” Gabriel asked curiously.
“Yes, even if we did go straight to the prince’s castle, timing would be wrong and we wouldn’t be able to penetrate its walls. Even if you may think there is no reason to go back to Elizabeth’s place you are sadly mistaken. Elizabeth has a blue print of the castle hidden away in her room somewhere. King Simon had given it to her a long time ago.” Vincent said as they quickened their pace towards the direction they needed to go.
“Why would the king do that?” Sophia asked confused.
“Simon loved Elizabeth like his own daughter. He was well aware of the way her father treated her and he gave her a safety house if she ever needed to get away. She used it quiet often, especially after his death. There’s a secret passage that even the prince is unaware of, which is why he put up giant walls around his castle, to isolate himself. When you know you are hated by everyone, you tend to keep yourself enclosed in a giant shell of protection.”
“Are you sure it’s still there?” Gabriel asked cautiously.
Vincent nodded, “Yes.”
“So then why haven’t you and Elizabeth stormed the castle sooner if you had this type of information?” Sophia asked dumb founded.
“Two people can’t take on an army.”
“They can if it’s you two.” Gabriel muttered.
Vincent shook his head, “No, you have forgotten the fact that Trevor is on their side as well. He’s no push over.”
“So why is your brother serving the prince anyways?”
“Probably for his own selfish reasons.” Vincent shrugged.
“Why do you two have bad blood?” Sophia asked curiously.
“Jealousy does things to people.” Vincent said softly as they came across the gate from the first time they had entered into Elizabeth’s mansion. “No guards, that means they’ve all been called to the castle and we will be walking right into a fight.” Vincent answered as he broke into a run towards Elizabeth’s house.
“So then we rush into trouble? I thought we ran from it.” Sophia said as her and Gabriel tried to catch up with Vincent.
Gabriel sighed as they desperately tried to keep up with Vincent who seemed to be getting further and further away. “Damn he’s impatient.”
After about 10 minutes of running, they finally came to the front door of Elizabeth’s home. They peeked in, seeing it was open, just to see blood in large puddles on the floor. Vincent stood there emotionlessly as thirty guards lay dead on the floor. Some were decapitated; others were left bleeding out from fatal wounds. “What a mess.” Sophia said sadly.
“Ah nice job little brother.” Trevor smiled down at his brother. He was sitting on the railing of the staircases that lead to a stage like area, so people could look down and greet their guests. “It seems like your birthday wish came true and someone took pity on your unfortunate soul and blessed you with more skill than you had.” Trevor teased, making Vincent tremble with anger. “As for your darling, she’s fine and she sends her birthday wishes. I thought I’d tell you so that way you can die in peace.”
