i think this would be a great fight. shikamaru would come up with some pretty crazy stategies but i think neji has the power to win.

Well Neji is a jounin and Shikamaru is a chunin so in terms of rankings Neji has the advantage. Neji also has the advantage in taijutsu and chakra/stamina for sure. Shikamaru could most likely outwit Neji if given the proper prep time but if there's no prep time it would go like this:

Since they are starting 20m apart Shikamaru has the initial advantage because of his shadow manipulation techs. Neji would be dodging them from the start. Neji is pretty fast (he matched and beat Lee after all) so he probably wouldn't get caught and he has that hakke kusho long range attack. He would knock Shikamura back with that or at least cause him to dodge and Shikamaru would have to break his shadow tech thus giving Neji a chance to run in and close up his chakras.

Plus Shikamaru is a support type shinobi and not a straight brawler like Neji. Shikamaru is always being protected (Shikaku, Temari, Kotetsu/Izumo, Asuma, Kakashi) and/or in need of prep time. Even if he could prepare Neji still has the byakugan and would see most traps Shikamaru has laid.

I think you guys are overestimating Shikamaru's intellectual abilities and thinking. That, or you are underestimating Neji's intellect.

Neji's pretty smart himself and I'm sure he wouldn't fall for a trick Hidan did.
Neji has got strenght advantage, speed advantage and jutsu advantage.

Taking into account that some not-really-great-in-terms-of-fighting ninjas (Hidan) have had little to no trouble escaping Shikamaru's shadow manipulation technique, Neji wouldn't get caught by it straight away.

What else is basically needed as a proof?

A human can't kill a Tiger without preparation or tool. HUman in this case is shikamaru and tiger - Neji.

This will be a great fight I think Neji will win because it be really hard for Shikamaru to fight Neji head on & even if he fights him in a area where he can hide & think up a plan Neji can find him with he's eyes Shikamaru has a bit of an advantage those because of he's shadow posession if he keeps he's destince but Neji hands down

i completely agree. people always say shikamaru is the smartest. it's actually not true. he just has a high IQ. which ONLY means that he's able to come up with very good stategies from quick thinking(coming from high IQ). neji was said to be the "genius" of naruto's generation. so he's able to figure out situations even better than shikamaru.

basically, you give shikamaru intel previous of the situation, he would be able to come up with tons of great stategies. you give neji a given circumstance, he'll be able to figure out what the best course of action would be and understand how to take care of the problem.

i say neji, but if shikamaru has at least 15-20 of prep time for the battle and has some of neji's abilities, he'd probably win. but a 64 palms on shikamaru is game over.

This would be a pretty even fight. I think in the end Shikamaru would find Neji's blind spot and then hit him with a shadow possession jutsu.

Another important aspect of this battle is range vs. hand to hand. Shikamaru uses his shadows from a distance while Neji uses primarily, if not all, taijutsu. I think this would give Shikamaru a huge advantage. He would know that Neji needed to get within range and could set up some sort of trap.

You're forgetting how small the blind spot is. No one except Kidomaru (the spider dude) is finding Neji's blind spot because Kidomaru had the ability to make big adjustments in the trajectory of his arrows impossibly fast while the velocity remained the same. Shikamaru doesn't have any attacks (like dropping spiders on him) that would even hint that Neji had a blind spot. Shikamaru could think up 1000 strategies but Neji is way faster than Shikamaru, Neji is considered a genius and the top of his class, and if Shikamaru got close to Neji like he tried on Hidan to touch and connect shadows, Neji would just use Kaiten and blow Shikamaru away. Shikamaru is all brains and Neji would eat him for breakfast.

I love shikkumaru but Neji hands down, he is a genious. Also I really don't know why we havn't seen much of him in action, but I think he's one of the stronger shinobis in the hidden leaf village.

thx dude and i would say shik b/c he can prepare 200 ways to beat neji and pick the best one out of them. but neji can just run up to him and hit him with gental fist. this will b an epic battle.
