well this is actually brains vs brains + byakugan, neji wins this one. he can repel ninja tools that shikamaru loves using, and neji will be able shut shikamaru of his chakra supply, and i dont think shikamaru's sneak attack well work against neji, he's feild of vision is close to 360.

I think Neji will win.

Shikamaru's got a lot of traps, but Neji can use Rotation for them. Also, Neji could most likely dodge Shadow Sewing and avoid shadows. He is pretty fast, he was able to move fast enough so that Kidomaru's arrow didn't strike him in the heart.

Plus, if Shika catches Neji, it's not like he'd be able to do all that much. But if Neji got close to Shika, he'd win pretty quickly

Because Neji knows Shikamaru. He'll question all of his own moves and whether its a part of a plan to trap him.

Beyond that, I'm assuming that Neji can see the chakra in Shikamaru's shadows with his byakuugan, and Shikamaru uses that to his advantage to herd Neji towards an area with more shadows, where Shikamaru can basically extend his shadow jutsu over an entire area, or to a place where he can "miss" Neji with one of Asuma's chakra blades and hit Neji's shadow (perhaps someplace high with a shadow cast some distance below). Shikamaru plays a pressure game for once and takes away Neji's entire offensive portfolio minus vacuum palm. As its the only thing Shikamaru really needs to worry about, he can focus on just watching for its (admittedly short) windup.

Shikamaru would try all of that but fail and be out of chakra as Neji is fine in a solo fight but Shikamaru isn't. Neji has displayed the nack for upsetting his opponents as he escaped air tight web that supposedly unbreakable and unable to move, also being unable to move/breath in the water prison tech and escaped it too. So being caught in a shadow shouldn't pose a big problem for Neji (especially in close range which is where its most likely to happen due to Neji being a close range fighter).

Nonsense. Shortly after a fight with Temari in which he claimed he didn't have the chakra to finish, he was winning an 8v1. And correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't Shikamaru have more solo wins than Neji? Lets see... wins over a sound ninja and Hidan for Shikamaru, and a win over Hinata for Neji.

Umm he needed saving by Asuma in that 8v1 and it wasn't that short of time between the two fights (sasuke fought, the invasion started, and he played sleep for a while)....Yes u are wrong so I will correct u, Shikamaru won only 1 solo fight (the sound chick in the preliminaries), the hidan fight he had help (Choji, Ino, & Kakashi).....Neji has won 2 seen (Hinata, and Kidomaru, and the one against himself if u want to include that one) and we hear of him beating Lee.....

As for the shadows I know the closer the stronger, but it only locks the limbs (which is y they can still talk afterwards)...point being that a full body blow (which comes from within) would hurt Shikamaru and cancel the shadow possession and on top of that leave him in range of the 8 trigrams...and I'm sure even u know what happens next
